Emailing me with a promotion that is BETTER and CHEAPER than my current $39 plan and telling me that I should get the $19 text plan. That is all.

P.s. I know all the benefits of pay monthly; but I also know the benefits of unlimited on-net calling ...

I'm staying on the $39 plan because I like Pay Monthly and the extra 1GB of Data each month. Would be good if they made the $19 plan Pay Monthly as well though

I have dropped our $59.00 to $39.00 and buy the 200 Minutes for $19.00. Get more minutes for less cost, more flexibility for spikes in usage and keep the bonus data and minutes

I know the feeling and I'm with Telecom.

I guess it's that stage in the market where they're all targeting prepaid users and trying to make them make calls / use data so when the promo expires they all jump onto plans like the rest of us!

I got that too, followed up by an apology email.
The problem is the first email was right when it said that I would benefit from the prepay plan based on my current usage!
Stuck on the $89 SGS3 plan till at least january though, and pay monthly for a couple of years...

I don't think the telecommunications market has ever moved away from this stage where it's all about prepaid.

I believe prepaid will continue to offer the best value, until there is a fundamental shift in thinking by the telcos.

Prepaid customers are the ones who can move the most easily between competing telcos -- therefore tempting other telcos' prepay customers away, and trying to keep your own, is more immediately productive.

I've always been on prepay, from when I was a student to now when I could easily afford a contract plan if I wanted one.  But for my usage, prepay is still the best.  I've never had the desire to spend more than about $20/mo on my cellphone usage.  The value I get for that now is pretty good compared to Vodafone prepay in 2000 when I got my first phone.  None of the on account plans have ever tempted me, mostly because what I want is data and a little voice/SMS, and what they offer is lots of voice/SMS and little data.  With monthly auto topup even the ease of payment that on-account offers is no longer an advantage.

Hi all,

The email was sent out in error, probably a mischievous Hobbit in the system. :\

It was meant to be targeted at Prepay customers to let them know about the great value on the new, upsized $19 Text Combo. The fact it was sent to Pay Monthly customers was an error (Jeff!) as explained in the 2nd email.

We believe our Pay Monthly customers get better value with Carryover minutes, 100 bonus minutes for life, bonus 1GB data on $39 plans and above, Shared Data plus a free phone or a generous discount if signing up to a 12 or 24 month term. All in all a better deal all round for customers that get the most out of their mobile.

Cheers

I suspect that the major advantage of prepaid plans from the telcos' perspective is not having to worry about credit control. Most people probably don't realise the enormous amount of resource that goes into chasing up overdue debts that are thinly spread over a very large number of customers.

I have always wondered why, in places like Aussie they seem or seemed (haven't been there in a while) to favour post paid, from my way of thinking prepaid is a good way to go, cash flow is improved and the time and effort, as mentioned above not having to chase payment should make it the prefered way to go.

I do understand that pre-paid customers would find it easy to change suppliers but there are also ways around that with locking phones down etc.

I was on prepaid since moving to NZ until about 2 years ago when I ported my number to my works account as they now pay my bill.

CLOSE to half of Australian mobile users are receiving bill shock and paying 40 per cent more than their advertised monthly contract, according to a study of the sector by Macquarie University.
The study finds that the average advertised monthly cap cost is about $53 but the actual cost to consumers averages $73.
The study's author David Gray said one of the main factors behind excess charges was data usage as more people switched to smart phones.

Which is why we strongly recommend Pay Monthly customers set up Spend Control to prevent bill shock - http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/paymonthly/paying-your-bill/spend-control

Set the limit you want to spend each month and you won't go over.

I'm on Pay Monthly $39 but don't get 1GB of data. Be really nice if I did. Another Hobbit to blame?

Existing customers can get the 1GB bonus if they switch from a month to month to a 12 or 24 month term plan.

You'll also be eligible for a Pay Monthly Bonus -  http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/paymonthly/plans/bonus

I am starting to use less data, esp now that I have wifi in most places and 2deg 3G has slowed down in the past 6 months and I only get 2g in Island Bay.
