I am having trouble making sense of the Orcon website with a view to signing up for UFB fiber on Northpower. Their pages seem to be outdated - once found.

Is this the pricing that applies to a "homeline" on fiber?

If so - it's a rip-off for VOIP...?

Orcon landlines national $0.19/min capped at $2.95 for 1 hour / mobile $0.43/min

Vs. e.g.:
Snap (Snap Plus) landlines national $0.10/min capped at $2.00 for 2 hours / mobile $0.25/min

Also they want to charge +$4 per month just for voicemail and caller ID. For a VOIP service!

When i signed up for Orcon Fiber over a month ago i did it through the sign up online process i have the unlimited fiber plan & National Landline Calling (1 hr/call) + Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Waiting i didn't assign any country to the Unlimited International Landline Calls (1 hr/call) total cost a month $134.00 12 months when i signed but i think since then the unlimited plan is a bit cheaper.
But still when shopping around everyone is a bit different .

I think you misunderstand what the voip component is. Genius is different to POTS as it puts the last leg of your voice connection over voip rather than POTS (separate copper circuit). This means we don't have to buy the copper POTS service in to provide it to you and is absolutely the reason when Genius was launched that we were able to pass on that saving to consumers, that saving at the time was something like $35/mth and resulted in the circa $75-80 price level for broadband and phone that we see in New Zealand today.

The rest of the voice switching infrastructure is the same, so voicemail, switching out to other non-voip networks etc etc is provided on the same infrastructure as our POTS (non-Genius) customers.

So on our pricing we have a common set of toll rates, but on Genius your landline rental is effectively free when compared to a traditional POTS-on-copper service.

Can you configure the Genius router to use something more sensible like 2Talk/iTalk or other SIP service?

I steered clear of Orcon based on the horrendous VOIP/SIP pricing when making the move to fiber. What you'd expect to pay for POTS not a VOIP/SIP service.

Vs Slingshot iTalk at $10 a month for 500 minutes to landlines, 44 international countries, and mobile @ 26c/min. If you have a Slingshot naked account then you should get a $10 credit for iTalk so effectively iTalk is free for 500mins.

I cannot speak for Orcon Genius routers but in the Snap! FritzBox the SIP settings can be very easily changed. You could even have more than one SIP account on the router (Such as Snap Plus and 2Talk etc. Used outgoing numbers can be switched using a dialed external line (such as press 1 for Snap Plus and press 2 for 2Talk). Very flexible.

As far as I know the Orcon Genius SIP settings are locked away from the user.

Mmm, I have no experience with Genius. Didn't realize it'd be locked down - but not surprised. Good to know. Fritz!box is quite nice, and gives quite a bit of flexibility, I've been enjoying it.
