Is it worth going for the 4G Cel-Fi given that the price difference isn't huge? As it's a newer model my guess is that the electronics may have improved and I notice the coverage has gone from 600 m2 for the 3G version to 900 m2 for the 4G version (still not enough though).

Given the signal level, is it likely that an external aerial will be needed?

I couldn't see any feedback on how good they are. Does anyone have experience of them at home/work?

Background.

Have 4G signal outside at -118 dBm, go 500 m in any direction and that increases to around -109 dBm. Inside this drops to HSPA 14.4 Mbps and is at a level that will often drop calls. (All networks signals are bad at the houses around me, not just 2Degrees. Might be some big trees interfering.)

Nokia 6110, 6210, 6234, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Huawei Ideos X5 (Windows Mobile), Samsung Galaxy SIII, LG G4, OnePlus 5, iPhone Xs Max (briefly), S21 Ultra. And I thought I hadn't had many phones - but the first one around 1997.

Yes get 4G. That is what telcos are investing in when they put in new towers. And new towers are still going up all the time. This will give you the best chance of coverage.

Also 700mhz 4G "Extended"/Band 28 whatever they call it, travels quite far/well so is especially helpful for coverage, and you can get away with not having an external antenna.

Sorry just realized you were talking about cell signal booting with Celfi, not a hotspot.

I don't think voice uses 4G at the moment, but even if it boosted your data signal in 4G its probably worth it.

We use cellfi at work, and its works alright, makes the signal here usable, when normally it was patchy.
