Fibre Broadband Provider, MyRepublic has today announced residential Gigabit Fibre broadband across all 33 Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) towns and cities.

In an announcement this morning (editors, Thursday 8 September), Chorus have joined the other Local Fibre Companies (LFCs) Enable, Northpower Fibre and Ultrafast Fibre (UFF) advising that from 1 October a 1000Mbps/500Mbps service would be available to all 33 UFB towns and cities.

MyRepublic MD, Vaughan Baker says the announcement allows us to deliver residential Gigabit services across all of New Zealand. This is a direct result of the company working with infrastructure providers campaigning for introduction of Gigabit Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) technology.

Feenix Communications has been appointed as an additional provider to support MyRepublic’s rollout to consumers and to deliver a purpose-built network to support the gig over the UFB network. Feenix CEO, David Heald says “The company is utilising the latest networking technology from Nokia to provide the core backhaul network fabric required to support the gig experience.”

Nokia Oceania Managing Director Ray Owen said “Nokia is a strong believer in the ability of ultra-broadband to enable innovation and support future growth in the New Zealand economy. MyRepublic and Feenix Communications are at the forefront of the market, delivering gigabit services for more New Zealanders, and we’re delighted to support their work.

Baker says MyRepublic aims to have as many Kiwis as possible on a Gigabit connections and therefore it will automatically upgrade all 200Mbps residential customers across New Zealand to a 1000Mbps gig plan for no additional cost in October.

Additionally, new customers who sign up to MyRepublic’s 200Mbps service in those centres ahead of October will be upgraded at no charge as soon as it is live.

MyRepublic led the way when Gigabit services were announced in Dunedin, Christchurch, Hamilton, Whangarei Tauranga, New Plymouth and Wanganui, with the first residential plans available to order from $59.99 for the first six months and then $119.99 for the remaining 18 months of a 24-month term.

“MyRepublic puts customers first. Everyone’s busy and customers shouldn’t have to contact their ISP and negotiate a new contract or beg to be upgraded to the gig.”

“UFB technology is a nationally owned resource and MyRepublic wants it shared with as many businesses and individuals as possible to ensure everyone in New Zealand benefits from this fantastic national infrastructure,” Baker says.

I've recently been upgraded from 200/200 to "gig" but, at the risk of sounding ungrateful for a free upgrade the results have been a little underwhelming.

I've run this test connected directly to the ONT on a late model HP elitebook laptop which has no trouble with gbit speeds locally.  The results did not vary.  Have also reset the ONT a number of times, but again, no change.

I note that each time I do a test, there's a spike initlally to 800+mbit then it drops away to the mid-high 400s, which makes me think maybe it's still being artificially limited?

I have a number of colleagues also in Hamilton who are connected with MR and are getting speeds in the 900's as expected.

Have a job logged with MR, but it takes a while to work through these things when they only reply to emails once every 1-2 days :(

Anyone else getting similar results?

Sophos UTM 9.4 appliance.

Quad core Atom 2.4ghz processor and 4GB ram + SSD.

It's not the router.

Also as noted above, results when connected directly to the ONT are the same.

So exciting to hear about all the Gigabit connections 80% (?) of the country is going to get.

But as a internet user who is on ADSL2+ with no hope in of ever getting a faster copper connection with Attenuation(dB) 32.

                        Downstream   Upstream
Data rate(Kbps) 8848               1005

My only hope is 4G home. But with its limited data caps...I can't see it being a viable option either.

Seeing all this talk about Giga connections....enough to make a grown internet user want to cry. lol

To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about not hitting 900Mbps+, I was also on the 200 plan and got the upgrade to Gig, the only time I've noticed a performance improvement is when I've done a speed test...and given that's not what I typically use the internet for, its not a problem. I'm sure there will come a time when I can fill that gigabit pipeline, but until that happens, I won't worry about shedding a couple of hundred Mbps here or there:-)

If my Twitter feed slows down, I'll be on the horn to MR;-)

I'm definitely not worried.  The upgrade is amazing even at the speed it's at now. It's totally unnecessary to go any faster.

But if I had a car that only made half the power it should, sure it could still get to the shop ok. But there's no way I wouldn't try to fix it,

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

My PC couldn't get much over 700Mbps, I disabled Adblocker, Antivirus, and updated LAN driver and managed over 800Mbps. I can copy to my local server at over 97MB/s so the nic is capable. Issue is with the browser/ Speedtest / and NIC combined. My Server with 10GBe NIC happily does 940Mbps speed tests every time. Get 2 PC's and do speed test at the same time and if possible monitor the traffic through the router. Using Jdownloader software I have seen my PC hit 95MB for 1 or 2 downloads, but when they are coming from overseas I wouldn't expect them to get max line rate.

Testing on the same laptop at a colleagues place netted over 900mbit down.

Out of curiousity I ran the test on two separate machines. Combined their speeds were about the same as I normally get.  Certainly no faster.

A little epilogue.  After a few days, my connection started performing as expected.  Maybe there were some stuff that UFF had to do in the middle somewhere?  No one seems to know, but anyways, all's well right?
