Hi all,

I am curious as to who all still have IPv6 disabled in an attempt to fix 2d's ongoing IPv6 issues.

Did Snap/2d manage to resolve the IPv6 issues on your connection or are you still putting up with it?

If they did resolve the IPv6 issues, what was the cause and what was actioned to resole the issues?

Cheers

I've had issues with IPv6 going offline for a day or maybe a few hours at night seems to have been stable lately. What specific issues are you talking about?

I have not checked all of those forum threads in detail, but the first few I looked at were all the usual ones caused by MTU discovery problems caused by the 2D PPPoE interface not sending ICMPv6 Packet Too Big messages when it gets packets that are too big.  Facebook is usually the first site you notice that problem with as it is IPv6 enabled and sends long packets from its first few pages.  If you have a FritzBox and enable IPv6, you should not be getting any of these sorts of problems unless you are connected to an old PPPoE server that does not do overprovisioning.  Overprovisioning is where the PPPoE interface is set up to be able to use a physical MTU that is larger than a standard Ethernet packet size, so that the extra bytes for the PPPoE protocol overhead do not reduce the size of the TCP/IP packets sent over the interface below the standard size.  Soon after I went onto a fibre connection, 2D changed the router I connect to and the PPPoE became overprovisioning capable, so I set up my Ubiquiti ERLite3 to use the extra bytes available on the PPPoE interface in the same way a FritzBox will and this problem went away.

If you are still having this problem and you do not have PPPoE overprovisioning available, or can not use it with your router, then way to fix it is to get your IPv6 routers to send their Router Advertisement packets with the MTU option advertising the smaller MTU that will actually pass throught the PPPoE interface.  That is what I had my ERLite3 doing before 2D changed their router.  But if you have a FritzBox, call 2D support and get them to fix it.

Please note that this issue and the fix for it has been discussed here a number of times now - there should be no-one who is still suffering from it.  And if 2D support is any good, they should have it in their database by now and be able to fix it easily or tell you how to.  But I bet they can't unless you get a proper network technician to help instead of front line customer support.

I've had no issues for the year or so I've been IPv6 via fibre with Fritz 7490 in standard config.

Have been running 2D IPv6 on default config via 7390/7490 for last 3 years and only ever had one issue (a good 2 1/2 years ago) that was resolved within a few weeks. Otherwise its been rock solid and gets a lot of use.

As others have mentioned, most of those issues you listed all come down to IPv6 fragmentation issues.

snap should be able to sort this with the fritzbox, if you have a third party modem you need to make the changes.

The biggest issue i see with RSP's putting out IPv6 is often, their modems are not configured for handling v6 correctly.

alot of this comes down to the differances to how MTU sizes are detected in IPv4 vs IPv6.

Hi all,

There are currently no ongoing issues with IPv6 on our broadband network, and there haven't been for quite some time (as evidenced by the age of those threads)

If you are having trouble with IPv6 on your connection, please contact us and work with us to investigate the issue. If you are using a device supplied by us, on our configuration, you should see no issue. If you have another device, or a complicated home network behind it, there may be other causes behind any IPv6 issues.

Feel free to contact us here if you'd like us to check anything out.

Thanks,

Ralph ^JOB

MTU problems generally relate to upstream hops. In theory they should be resolved by PMTU discovery, but they don't because many upstream routers simply drop packets rather than send a notice downstream. This is both for IPv6 and IPv4.

If you start fragmenting packets then you start having issues with encrypted traffic. So MTU issues will usually show easily from VPN or HTTPS traffic.

Just because you have these issues does not mean it is 2D fault, it is usually an upstream router that will drop packets that are too big; or drop big packets when it is under load (especially UDP packets).

1420 is a good MTU size (Xbox minimum is 1420).

Thanks for the info folks.

This topic, rather than being a problem solving topic, it was more directed at establishing how many people still have IPv6 disabled on their connections.

@2degreesCare, I PM'ed you about 6 months ago about this but you never replied....

Hey 2degreesCare, can you provide a link to what the recommended configuration is/should be.  I have a device from yourselves.  It receives an IPv6 address, however, nothing goes beyond the 2nd hop (past devices in my home) I believe.

I have v6 on at all times, with no noticeable troubles. Not using a device supplied by 2degrees.

R7000 running TomatoUSB. 1492 MTU + MSS.
