We switched from Orcon to 2Degrees on Wednesday.  We've kept the modem from Orcon (as it was working well) rather than take the modem offered by 2Degrees.  But we've noticed a marked performance drop in website loading, both on desktop and mobile devices connected (wifi and ethernet).

I wish I could say there was a discernable pattern, but I haven't been able to find one yet.  I notice it most on Facebook on my iPhone (all apps up to date) where links from FB open in the in-app browser much slower (if at all).  I timed a few (from different sites, local and overseas) and some took more than 2 minutes to load (before I gave up).  Whereas before, with Orcon, most links would load in a second or two. I've tested this by loading FB in a Chrome browser on my phone and it sometimes works better, sometimes not (again, no discernable pattern).  On desktop, some sites (non-FB) load a text-only version of the site, but upon refresh load the whole thing, or will say it isn't connected to the internet, before suddenly loading.

On my phone, it's not restricted to FB.  Loading the App Store app took over a minute to display anything.  When I switch to mobile data (on Skinny 4G) it's fine, so it definitely seems to be a wifi/home connection issue, rather than a phone/app issue.

I don't have many ideas where to start diagnosing this issue.  I've rebooted the router several times, and same with my phone and PC.  We use DNS4ME.net's DNS servers to for geo-unblocking and that seems to still be working.  But the only thing I can think is that somehow the DNS service is slowing things down.  Are there settings on the Orcon router (Netcomm NF18ACV) that I need to check/change?  Any suggestions welcomed.

Does the same issue happen if you use the official 2d DNS?

So you did change the WAN interface settings from DHCP to PPPoE??

I have had something like this before and it was to do with the MTU setting.  This was years ago however.  Found the link about the same issue

Thanks for the suggestions.

@spyware - I can't see where in the settings I would change the WAN interface from DHCP to PPPoE.  The screenshot below shows the ETH WAN is PPPoE so I'm assuming that's correct already?

@tripp - I took a look at the thread you linked.  When I edit the ETH WAN entry from the screenshot above it gives me a place to edit the MTU (though it indicates the value is to a max of 1492).  Presumably this is where I would change the MTU to 1500 but I can't see where I would edit the MTU to 1508 for VLAN10 and Ethernet as suggested by the other thread.  Where in the settings would I look for that?

Can you change the mtu to 1500 on that page. It looks like it would not accept as the max is 1492

When I had the issue years ago I just needed to change it on the wan pppoe setup

Just tried, and nope - won't accept a value higher than 1492.

I took another look at the settings pages.  For ETH WAN is says IPv6 is disabled.  Under VDSL10, however, there is an option to enable IPv6.  But that entry on the screenshot above shows VDSL10 is not connected.  I didn't think it needed to be (this is fibre, not VDSL), but maybe I do need to connect it as well as ETH WAN?

And are you using the 2degrees DNS?

Ah flick on ip6 and see what happens. Looking at 2degrees website they do support ipv6.
You might want to have a bit of a google. I have been looking at a search like orcon / slingshot router on 2degrees.

Let us know if you get it working as this question will come up again.

Yes this is important as well. Leave the router on the 2d dns setting and test and if you want to use another dns service then try it on 1 device.

sorry - can't help with the settings . . . .

But you should have accepted the 2D router. it is better than the Orcon offering (assuming you have a netcomm modem/router)- and of course you wouldn't now be having to troubleshoot router configurations.

Can't seem to find what 2Degrees DNS servers are. Googled, searched their site - nothing. Found a thread on GZ which lists them, but it's about 4 years old. Will they still be the same?

Thanks.

There's a place in the DNS settings page to specify static IPv6 DNS addresses.  Does 2D have IPv6 DNS addresses I can add in here?  And if they did, could I keep the DNS4ME IPv4 addresses, and use the 2D IPv6 DNS addresses?

Using the 2D DNS addresses definitely makes the links in FB load faster.  But if I have to keep using them, what's the solution for using the DNS4ME?  It's so convenient having them on the router rather than having to configure individual devices.  But is that the only alternative?
