Press release:

Along with global satellite provider Lynk, 2degrees has announced a trial of technology that enables customers to connect from areas outside of terrestrial mobile coverage – bringing 2degrees closer to providing mobile connectivity everywhere in New Zealand.

“New Zealand is well served by world class mobile technology, but we’re not a country contained to urban living – we’re a country of outdoor explorers, trampers, farmers and boaties. Like other mobile providers around the world, 2degrees is exploring how best to enable connectivity for our customers when they’re beyond traditional coverage,” says 2degrees CEO, Mark Callander.

“LEO satellites are going to be a future contributor to the mobile experience and we’re committed to ensuring our customers have access to opportunities as they develop. We’ll begin with initial trials shortly and, over time, we expect 2degrees customers will be able to send text messages and ultimately get voice calls and basic data services from anywhere in New Zealand. Of course as satellite-to-cell develops, it is hoped that this technology could also play an important role in keeping customers connected following major events such as we’ve seen recently.”

Lynk is a US company deploying an innovative satellite-based telecommunication service, by allowing mobile network operators to connect standard mobile phones via cell towers in space when they are either beyond current mobile coverage, or when the mobile network has an unplanned outage.

James Alderdice, VP Asia-Pacific at Lynk, says “Lynk is building, launching, and operating a constellation of LEO satellites called “Lynk the World (USASAT-NGSO-10)”, which acts as cell towers in space and provides connectivity directly to mobile phones without any modifications to either the MNO network or customer devices.”

“The beauty of this is its simplicity as Lynk works with all existing standard 3GPP mobile devices.”

Ahead of its initial commercial service launch, Lynk has demonstrated and tested the service in 21 countries. The trial with 2degrees will start this month. Lynk has already deployed three operational commercial satellites with the initial service providing intermittent messaging functionality. As more satellites are deployed the service availability will increase and grow to provide mobile broadband and voice.

Callander says that 2degrees is already utilising LEO satellite technology as reserve backhaul and also offering fully integrated LEO satellite broadband solutions for business customers, as a key tool for redundancy and resiliency in geographically diverse and challenging countries such as ours.

“While full LEO satellite mobile services are some way away, we’re testing capabilities in this area to ensure 2degrees customers are set to benefit as Lynk LEO satellites are deployed.”

How does it work?  New hardware (some other device), or existing mobile handsets with particular hardware feature?

Ok I see with all existing 3gpp  devices, but are they talking to the satellites directly?

Not clear but release says "“The beauty of this is its simplicity as Lynk works with all existing standard 3GPP mobile devices.”"

I found this by looking up 3gpp

Note, seems to be a 5G thing....so I would assume if your handset doesn't support 5g then that might be the limiting hardware set.

Just received:

2degrees is set to send text messages via a ‘cell tower in space’ this month.

The trial comes as the telco today announced it has signed a commercial contract with Lynk Global, Inc. to bring satellite-to-phone connectivity to 2degrees customers across New Zealand. The agreement will ensure New Zealanders stay connected no matter where they are, using Lynk’s ‘cell-towers-in-space.’

The May 25 test will trial Lynk’s satellite to phone service, in preparation for 2degrees’ commercial launch of the service later this year.

2degrees CEO Mark Callander said: “Satellite technology is moving at an astonishing pace and we’re pleased to be working with Lynk Global to get a satellite to cell phone service in 2degrees’ customers hands.”

Callander said 2degrees has started promoting the service, via an advertising campaign, social media, and customer communications but he said the communications won’t get ahead of the technology which is developing.

“2degrees is nothing if not straight up. While this is an exciting technology you won’t hear us making claims for 18 months plus away – we’ll keep customers across actual progress, actual direct to cell satellites in operation and actual customer availability which is likely to be later this year.”

Callander said the test will be conducted in an area with no cell signal, around 30 minutes north of Whanganui.

From there, the two companies would complete network integration work, and then release the service to customers.

The service will initially let users send and receive messages on their current mobile phones when a Lynk Global satellite is overhead. As Lynk Global launches more satellites, the service will be available for longer durations, and ultimately also allow voice and data services.

Lynk has more 30 commercial agreements in place across the globe and has currently demonstrated its technology in more than two dozen countries and on seven continents.

Based on the call we had with them last week they can support all the way from 2G to 5G. What they broadcast to us is yet to be confirmed - but we wouldn't limit it to 5G.

I think the biggest problem there is that the batteries wouldn't last long enough to send an SMS.

Atleast the satelite wouldn't need to pump out as much power, espcially with one of those old 8 watt beasts :)

Hi all,

There's some more detail here, https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/lynk-and-2degrees-celltower-in-the-sky-satellite-to-mobile-trial/6I7GSO3F6OZBCVTOAIS34YZKPU/

But as always, sing out with questions.

Cheers!

Perhaps a stupid question, but does this mean eventually if we do a network search we’ll see Lynk (and SpaceX) in addition to 2degrees etc?

I'll hazard a guess - it will appear as your home network, eg. your phone will automatically attach. It may have a different name once your attached however or may have certain services limited.

To force someone to manually select it wouldn't be great from a experience perspective.

Lynk will appear as an available network, yes, but what it calls itself (e.g. does it call itself Lynk, 2degrees, or something else) has not been decided.

I wonder how this will compare with the Starlink based service being offered by OneNZ.  Starlink has a massive advantage of hundreds of satellites in orbit while Lynx appear to only have a handful so far.  For an emergency only service intermittent service may be acceptable as long as it is automatic, i.e. upload message when satellite is in view but it is clear sub-optimal.

By "being offered" you mean "planned".

It is not active really as per release "SpaceX’s next generation satellites will be in orbit and ready to provide connectivity from late 2024. "
