According to http://slingshot.co.nz/NSMSummary.aspx "Customers cannot make or recieve calls" There have been calling issues since tuesday too. Looks like they did some major maintenance overnight, but i guess it hasnt fixed things.

Has been a horrible week to be a slingshot customer - intermittent/no internet access (dsl ppp issues) in south island earlier this week, italk disconnecting randomly through the week, and had a short dsl ppp outage again this morning. Good thing I rarely use/need our phone, I hadnt noticed those issues.

What would happen if someone had an emergency. Surely there is an minimum service standard. Telecom gets hurled over the coals by the media if they have a problem, but the media doesn't seem to take any notice of many other providers.

You cant count on anything with slingshot, but i would hope/assume that 111 services would have redundancy even if not a statutory requirement. Might be a different story with italk (VOIP)

Telecom gets such treatment because it actually runs the 111 system i.e when they screw up noone in the country can call 111. Thankfully they havent ever screwed up on such a scale iirc, although there have been isolated incidents. Also people like to bash telecom over everything because there are the incumbent with a monopoly

Just called for an update

They did not have an update from the "support team" - I did point out that it was 8 hours since the network status message had been posted.

Got the usual "have you rebooted your device" etc etc etc - no changes here, internet is fine, just italk aint working...

*shrug*

Annoying for me, but will be worse for those that NEEED the phone working.

Considering 2talk...

Not so fast...2talk is owned by the same people that own slingshot.

World Exchange seem to take voip seriously and have a good presence here

Ahhhh I see......

Well, I gave my ATA a few kicks in the guts again and it has come right as of now...but interesting that they tested with my credentials using a soft phone and was fine for them.

I'm in the North Island. From the 20/10 I started having
connection probs with slingshot... I couldn't connect or
I could connect and I was getting different error messages.
I rang slingshot and waited for what may have been half
an hour, their message said something like they had a high level of
callers waiting online.
I got somebody, I explained the problem, he spoke to someone,
came back and told me  " You changed something on your
computer."  I said I didn't, and he said if the prob continues
ring Slingshot again on a cellphone to get help.
The problem of internet instability continued from 20/10
until 30/10, when miraculously it started to reconnect every time
again without a problem and without error messages.
Slingshot had said to me there was no issue on their
side of things....but I was getting a message saying ...port
open but the remote isn't responding.
Strange.

Haven't had any significant broadband connection issues with Slingshot in recent weeks, pretty stable except for bandwidth constraints. Suggest you look at your connection first.

That doesn't excuse the customer service!

Sorry I should have said, I'm on dial up.

I did do some network diagnostics
stuff, pinging etc when I had trouble
connecting to the net and the read out suggested
 that everything was working fine.

Just seems weird to have a connection prob from
20/10 to 30/10 and now its all fine again, without
any changes having being made to the pc.

I'm just not sure how the issue resolved itself,
but it's definitely connecting fine again.....   :)

Similar story here, my italk line into a linksys ata has been dropping for periods of 5mins to 30mins throughout the day today.

I understand consumer-grade services are best effort, but you would expect that when there is a known network issue preventing you from using the service that they would take less than a week to fix it!

Why don't you email them, if you can find an email address on their website to get through to them on. YOu could also PM one of their techs on their forum, or use twitter, to tweat them.

You would probably find that VoIP is not recommended as an emergency service, you should have a mobile for backup if you dont have any landline phone.

Time to find a new industry!
