I currently use Telecom as my internet and landline provider, but I was cold-called by Orcon yesterday. The call was because they said they now have new ASDL2 equipment in our area and they'd be able to migrate me to use this, as well as offer me a saving on what we currently pay (less $ for more GB). I work from home, so having a reliable internet service often takes precedence over speed or cost (although an improvement in both of those is always welcome). After being with Telecom since 2004, and not having any real reliability issues with their service, I'm always hesitant to make the leap into the unknown. I'm hoping fellow Geekzoners can help me out here, and detail their experiences (both negative and positive). I'd be especially interested in those who have experience with both Telecom and Orcon.

As for the new ADSL2 capable equipment (and excuse my ignorance here); does Orcon have its own equipment for this, or does the fact that ADSL2 can now be offered by them also indicate that Telecom may be in a position to do the same? The last I checked (last week), our area wasn't scheduled to be ADSL2 capable with Telecom until Sept 2011.

my advice would be to stay away. when orcon works well, it works really well and leaves a telecom connection for dead in terms of speed.

however, the are constantly having issues with not enough bandwidth etc.

Ive used both Telecom and Orcon, the only reason i prefer Telecom is its more constant. you always get the same preformance,  Orcon tends to be a bit all over the place.

Orcon and other ISP's have installed equipment in quite a few exchanges (but not all).

Your Line >> Cabinet/Exchange > Backhaul > ISP Handover > ISP Network Core > ISP's domestic/international transit

If you are on a Orcon non + plan, the equipment in the cabinet/exchange that terminates your dsl connection, the backhaul for your data and the ISP handover links are Telecom wholesale services.

If you are on an Orcon + plan, you are connected to Orcon gear in the exchange (not in any cabinets yet) and then use their choice of provider for backhaul and handover (eg: FX Networks, Vector etc).

Performance may be better on Orcon + at peak times as Orcon can contract a lower contention/congestion on the backhaul and handover from their provider.  On non + the Telecom wholesale services are fixed at what the ComCom has regulated must be provided.

I would check what exchange/cabinet are you connected to here:

Im on Orcon+ and very happy with it, yes they have had some bandwidth issues occasionally but all ISPs have that at some point or another. But Orcon always admit it and get onto it.

dclegg, which area are you in ?

Ragnor: Orcon and other ISP's have installed equipment in quite a few exchanges.

What exchange/cabinet are you connected to? Check here:

Exchange Area: Te Atatu
Cabinet Name: TAT/AJ

I added some extra detail to my post earlier.

If you will be connected to a cabinet I would not consider an Orcon + plan at all, Orcon don't have gear in the cabinets yet (and probably won't due to the cost) and you will get higher line rate and better performance and stability terminated on gear in the cabinet.

If you go on Orcon+ terminated in the exchange you are going to have problems when the cabinet in your area goes live, inevitably and you will have to come off a + plan after a bunch of mucking around and troubleshooting when this happens (sept 2011 according to your first post).

Personally I would stay on Telecom and avoid that sort of hassle, they have those new Total Home Broadband plans coming out soon which offer more GB for less dollars (sacrificing some calling perks).

stay away - i'm on Orcon+ and the service is below what I would expect from that provider.

Put it this way - Telecom offered me far better service in terms of speed, reliablity and customer support before I moved to Orcon.

I had experienced 4 outages in 5 months (although they were never more than an hour long) but very annoying.

Price is not really an issue as I happily pay in excess over $100 a month just for ADSL alone. I might be switching providers soon.

When you're connected to a cabinet an Orcon non + plan is an option just like every other ISP providing service over Telecom wholesale (including Telstraclear, Snap, Telecom retail etc)

Yeah, I saw that. Thanks for all the info. TBH my main bugbear is my current data cap (on a 20GB plan, which I regularly exceed). Based on another GZ thread, it sounds like Telecom may be rejigging their plans shortly, so it may be worthwhile putting off any decision until I have more details.

I have no problems with my Orcon+ connection. Well, that's not quite true, had an issue with a crackly line and disconnections since last week. I rang up about it on Monday, sorted on Wednesday.

Having said that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're happy with Telecom, why take the risk? Don't they have plans with larger caps, business plans or something?
