I have been sending them email after email/feedback forms etc (Thought I would give it a try since they have always been 100% useless on the phone)

No replys.. not anything.. . there is not even anything on the website regarding leaving

Anyways, how do I leave ??

My partner signed up for a 18 month contract before we moved in together ><

It says

  • 18 Month Contract
    • Free Standard Connection
    • $179 early termination fee
    • Free Orcon Genius Lite rental
    • One move house included with no additional set up fees
It says nothing about 30 days notice on it (However the no contract one does)

So does anyone know how I go about this ?? in terms of timing/switching to another ISP etc

Thanks

if you want to switch to another ISP, then they will arrange the move. you don't need to contact Orcon at all.

(although once you have signed up with the other ISP it is worth calling Orcon to make sure the disconnect notice has been recieved and confirm your final bill etc)

Just call them and make it explicitly obvious you want to cancel and don't hang up until they cancel your account. I don't think they'll have trouble doing that for you.

Welcome to the Hotel Calif-Orcon - you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

I rung orcon, asked if they had any new plans coming up.. the lady on the phone said no

I told them that I can get better plans and service elsewhere and I would like to leave

The lady on the phone seemed to be at a loss of what she had to do.. so i said I would call back later

Is this normal ? :S

Hi there - firstly I'm really sorry to hear that you're wanting to leave us. Let me know if there is anything I can do to encourage you to stay on board with us, we'd love to have you!

If you are wanting to change providers you would definitely be best to contact your new provider first and get them to start the process. They'll send us a notice saying that you're moving providers - but it's always best to give us a call as well just in case we don't receive it.

If you're under contract you must pay the relevant early termination fee - in your case $179.00. Those customers who are not under a contract need only give 30 days notice of their intention to cancel.

If you can provide me with the ticket numbers of the emails you've sent us I can have someone take a look for you - I'm sorry for the delay in getting a reply.

Cheers,

Cam

How does that work regarding the final bill etc.. do we get charge a entire month ?? or just up to when we are switched

Basically our bill cycle ends today (Cap resets tonight)

I'd suggest you sign up with a new ISP to be connected in 35 days time or so (organize a date) and then send Orcon a letter in the post confirming this (and take a photo as you put the letter in the post box in case they "lose" it).

The applicable terms are here: http://www.orcon.net.nz/about/terms/category/general.

Based on this, you just call up Orcon on 0800191919 (this is actually Business support, so I assume you don't use that number. I've always used 0508 4ORCON) and tell them you want to cancel. They start a 30 day countdown to cancellation from then. Based on that, you will receive a final bill for the period that starts before the 30 day countdown expires, so cancel on your billing anniversary (or the day before it actually) to avoid it.

You will not get a refund for the part month. It's pretty clear on that. Full months only.

Be VERY carefull with this, I got stung when switching TO Orcon from Vodafone. It probably depends on the ISP but Vodafone insisted I pay for the entire month even though I had switched to Orcon part way through the month. So in other words, to avoid getting double charged for at least part of the month you would have to time it so that the switch over is right at the end of your billing cycle, no easy task when the time that the new ISP takes to switch you over is highly variable and never guarunteed.

Bugger I've got this problem.  With Orcon on the no contract option and been looking for a new rental.  Finally found one yesterday and signed but as I'm on 21 days notice for my apartment and my orcon billing cycle is 20 days away I guess I'm going to end up paying twice.

Grrrrrr.  ISPs are a frickin nightmare in NZ!  Never had anything like as much trouble with ISPs when living in the UK & USA as I have here in NZ :(

Maybe they will match it if you called them? I would think that it would cost more to get a new customer, than retain an existing one. Telecoms plans though do look very good now. They have definitely turned a corner.

Remember that its $95 for the first 12 months + free tivo if you call telecom and give them the code still...

so.. join telecom.. pay $95 per month .. get 120GB .... + tivo .. + telecom service (like it or not.. have never had any wait times/issues)

stay with orcon.. pay $95 per month... get 40GB + orcon support
