@ jofizz

I completely understand where you are coming from. I have 3 x kids 5, 2 and 4 months. Its a big help sometimes to have something like Kidzone for 10-15 minutes. I guess people who don't have kids won't understand this.

The weird thing is that Mediaworks is effectively dumping the youth market by launching FOUR.
At the same time, TVNZ6 is dumping the child market, (and picking up the youth market.)
Ironically, from a quick glance over FOURs advertising schedule (PDF File), it seems childrens programs are to be screened throughout the day, with the actual "entertainment" shows to only be in the evenings.

From what info we have now, TVNZ6 will dump the Kids market for the Youth market, while C4/FOUR will dump the Youth market for the Kids market (during the day).

It appears that FOUR will be launching (with Childrens TV shows) on Sunday January 30th 2011. (Source)

So once I got back that, and looked after the end of Jan, you are totally right, lots of kids stuff from 6am to 12, which is perfect, and then 'slightly older' kids stuff from 2pm to 6pm.  It looks like FOUR will save the day for all our future square eyed kids an eb the new eletronic baby sitter for those of us who don't like to spend any day out in the daylight ;-)

Many thanks for the linka and info!

Call me cynical but I wonder how much insight the Mediaworks TV CEO had in the likely changes to TVNZ 6 and 7.

As one "kidszone" exits another arrives. Must be a coincidence.

That's what I found interesting, they are almost swapping audiences (intentional or unintentional).

Hmm.. So we have had Trackside join Freeview.. Getting TVNZ6 rebranded, getting C4 & C42 rebranded/reformatted, Stratos coming to Freeview HD and TVNZ7 with a new schedule.

And that's only taking us through until march!

I have a feeling that 2011 is going to be an eventful year.. Especially if FreeviewHD expansion is rolled out in time for the Rugby World Cup as it means more potential audience for advertisers.. Which means more potential revenue for new channels (hey, it's election year.. And free HD rugby is a relatively cheap bit of budget spending)

TVNZ6 only costs as little as $8m per year. That's less than the value of John Key's house or only 45c per person per year. One month of Sky could cost more than TVNZ6 would over a lifetime.

If some people want rights and consideration of what they want with no responsibilities or consideration of what others want, voters will do something like re-elect Labour and then there'll be bucketloads of cash disappearing from pockets.

jofizz: Hearing Te Reo and New Zealand accents on TV is fantastic, and under appreciated by many people.

Most young people in NZ already have American accents learned from the diet of American television.

My original comment related more to mattwnz's earlier comments wanting Heartland to be free on freeview than to TVNZ6.

However, TVNZ6 does cost money to run and there are no free lunches here. This can come either from:

1. subscriptions;

2. advertising; or

3. the taxpayer, either as a direct subsidy (funded by increasing taxes or cutting something else), or by diverting TVNZ's profits into a loss making channel rather than paying a dividend (which is analytically the same, the shortfall this leaves then has to be made up by increase taxes or spending cuts).

This isn't a question of ideology, at this point it's a question of arithmetic, the money has to come from somewhere and those are the options.

Subscriptions are an option, and it is up to TVNZ to see whether they can make the business model work. Their actions suggest they think they can't. Ditto for advertising, plus there seems to be a strong chorus for ad free TV on TVNZ6 from people who want the channel.

That leaves the taxpayer. It's a fairly simple political issue then. Is spending money on TVNZ channels better than other options for available money (health, education etc), and is it appropriate for people who aren't interested in the channel to be sent the bill for someone elses entertainment.

Personally, I am in favour of any spare cash spent on things like cheaper doctors visits for children, or reducing taxes, rather than free entertainment/babysitting for someone else's children. I also don't really fancy having my taxes hiked to pay for TVNZ6 either. Just like I don't expect to have the right to send the bill for my entertainment choices to people who aren't interested in what I want to watch.

Any freeview subscription model would be a failure as there is no gear out there to get it on.

If they had specced some form of CA from the start then they could do it, of if there was a requirement to have CAM/Cablecard slots on gear, but to expect people to get external boxes to plug into their freeview ready TVs just to get kids shows is not gonna happen - particually when you can pay nothing upfront and get sky which has lots more kids channels on it and has been offered as low as $26 per month recently.

I'd be fairly happy if TVNZ 7 became a 24/7 feed of BBC World, even with advertising. Surely there would be advertising dollars to be made from this?

There is too much local content made for TVNZ 7 for it to be a 24/7 feed of BBC World. And there is no need for this as BBC World broadcasts on Sky 24/7.

I think TVNZ 7 should have BBC World on during the overnight service (with the TVNZ Ticker) instead of the shambles that they already have. It has a bad layout and only plays snippets from the previous night's news. BBC World would be better!

Worried what to do when Kidzone finishes... God damn, it's only been around for a few years, why don't you do what you did before it existed!!!

Kidzone isn't finishing! It will be on TVNZ 7 as per the press release.
