I've had a Magic TV PVR tied up to a Samsung HDTV for about 14 months with no major issues. Its UHF not satellite. Suddenly this evening the TV won't display a picture - claims that the resolution on the Magic is a mismatch.

Nothing has changed my end and it was working this morning. Has something changed for others? Has there been some remote firmware upgrade or something? The TV will run up to 1900 odd - its a 36" LED if that matters. I've dug out the instructions and tried changing the resolution on the Magic right down to 750 via the front panel - no change.

Turned everything off and on 3 times, kicked the dog, any other suggestions ?

The resolutions would be 1080x1920 and 720x1280. 1080i50 would probably be the best resolution setting in the Magic TV for a recent LCD but it would depend on the TV.

Have you checked the plugs are in fully? The vibrations can make them slip out of place over time. If not that, the most likely possibility is hardware failure in either the Magic TV or the Samsung.

How is it connected? HDMI, YPbPr or composite? The Magic TV is supplied with a triple RCA YPbPr cable and stereo RCA cables for audio. The triple RCA cable can also be used for composite video but that is low quality. Try using YPbPr if you're using HDMI and try using HDMI if you're using YPbPr.

Thanks you! Yes I was using the HDMI cable. I swapped over to the YPbPr cable plus audio red/white cable and its all good now! I'm left wondering what failed - presumably the HDMI cable - which is pretty pathetic in under 2 years - but at least the problem is solved.

It is possible the HDMI cable was faulty but it is more likely that an HDMI input or inputs in the TV has gone bad. The culprit can be found via a process of elimination.

If it is the Magic's digital output that has failed then that isn't so bad as you can use YPbPr.

Make sure you change back from 720p to 1080i50 in the Magic TV and disable overscan in the LCD to restore picture quality.

Does the Magic output HD over component? I thought, being Freeview approved, meant SD only?
