Is it possible to watch international channels (japan) via a regular dish and set top box?

If so, how do I go about it?

Thanks!

Nah, you will need a 1-1.2m dish to pickup anything worthwile. NZ is very remote and as the beams are pointing directly here; you will need a beefy antenna.

I would suggest popping over to http://www.vetrun.net/forums/index.php and do some searches.

A lot of info there and failing that people that can help you however as already stated you will not be able to pickup Japanese satellite coverage using standard hardware.

I think NHK can be seen on Optus D2.

I am also wanting to do the same, Ive found that NHK/Japan TV is on Optus D2 sat at 152* East.

Im struggling to find solid recommendations on what equipment to purchase as there are so many mixed comments out there on what is required and what would be powerful enough etc. Can anyone recommend a setup that they have tested to work well?

From what I have seen a 1m dish, good cable and a powerful than normal LNB would be required.

A standard sky dish will pick up D2 not a problem, then all you need is a satellite receiver
If you have sky or freeview already then all you need to do is add a second LNB to the dish

...and if you want to add a second LNB to the same dish I'd recommend a 90cm or larger. Better for bad weather situations and for when you need to split the signal to multiple receivers.
