I know this isn't strictly the correct section, but I couldn't see anything related to non freeview satellites, but admins, feel free to move the thread.

I need to talk to someone who's receiving international satellite signals, as I'm in a situation where I need to get 16:9 feeds from some FTA international networks, and my current recievers are up to the task. There is also the issue of whether the source channels are 16:9, or not, but i'm okay if my receivers just output pillarboxed 16:9. The stations i'm needing are Aljazeera, DW Asia, VOA, and CCTV.

I'm interested to know anyone else setup, and whether their receivers output 16:9,etc, and any other good information you have. I will be talking to the people at Satmax, but they're not open at the moment, and I get reach them via cellphone at the moment.

DW Asia is on Asiasat 3S c-band. Which means you'd need a c-band dish. Probably at least 2.4m according to their website - http://dwelle.de/popups/popup_pdf/0,,6452062,00.pdf

Al Jazeera is on Asiasat 3S as well.

I've already got feeds of Aljazeera, DW, CCTV, VOA, on a C band dish (CCTV isn't on S3), the issue is my receivers are old, and I need to move into 16:9. I'm wanted to know the experiences of people with newer recievers, to get some advice so I don't waste money.

I don't know that there will be any difference between old and new receivers with regards 4:3 vs 16:9.

The broadcasts will be native to one or the other.
There should be an option under the receiver setup to control how it displays these to your TV.
ie there should be options for 16x9 output or 4:3 letter box or 4:3 Pan and Scan under the receivers display settings.

Unless I'm missing something?

ah OK, sorry, I misunderstood your question...

as for receivers, I'm not too sure. Strong have a good reputation, as do Ultraplus. Maybe you might want to post somewhere like Austech. You probably need to post what you want... i.e PVR function, HDMI, DVB-S2 etc etc.

My current receiver configuration is i've got 2 strong STR 4620, two Satmax's, and a Satmax Plus.
The satmax don't have an aspect ratio control. The strongs have a setting, but it doesn't actually change anything (go figure) The satmax plus has a 16:9 mode, which works, except the quality is awful when watching a 4:3 source channel (which will be pillar boxed, which is what I want) When watching a 16:9 channel, the satmax plus works a treat. So i'm going to move the satmax plus to DW Asia +, which is 16:9, but I guess I'll still going to need to get new receivers for the other 3 channels, which are 4:3 source as far as I can tell.

This is in a commercial application (but there isn't a lot funds available, so things are done on a limited budget)

Sounds like the TelstraClear setup in Barbadoes Street.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

So outputs over RF feed or similar? Personally I'd be looking at making them all the same box, that way the settings and menus etc would all the same and hopefully easier to get your head around.

Most of the names mentioned about are all fairly well known. For basic SD satellite reception most of the units are pretty solid now. I'd stay away from Coship myself. Things get a bit messy though when you get an HD capable unit as a lot of us have had problems of one sort or another with the more fancy satellite and terrestrial freeview HD units.

A lot of the satellite receiver problems relate to PVR functions etc which you wouldn't need anyway so you should be fine with whichever modern box you go with now. Honestly most new boxes will have 16:9 and 4:3 letterbox or pan/scan output options.

Close, but no cigar.

Its not a RF modulated system, but a record and/or live playback system, so composite is required to work with our current setup. I have been looking at these as an option: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260718709408&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
But I can't find any documents for that device, so I have no way of knowing what the aspect ratio controls these units have.

CCTV English news is available on Ku band from AsiaSat 4 which a 1.2m solid dish should be enough for. A larger dish to Chinasat 6B for CCTV may be more reliable long term.

After wasting lots of time with Satmax, only to find out none of their products work for what I want, I went to talk to Hills signal master, and had it all sorted with 2 hrs. 3 new telray receivers installed, and they'll give me a 16:9 signal, and perform the appropriate cropping or letter-boxing whether the feed is 4:3 or 16:9.

I'll defiantly use hills over satmax in the future!
