From the name it looks like it is spare.

Are you getting it on DVB-S or DVB-T and where? Edit: Just saw DVB-T on the picture!

I've seen it too while looking at the channels broadcast off the TVNZ mux recently, but I passed it off as the SSU data channels as there were none present at that particular moment, seems my original assumption was wrong.  (This is Waiatarua transmitter for me, I wonder want transmitter OP is using, (i.e. is it NZ wide))

I've seen it from Wharite (Manawatu). I *really* hope it is not for a new channel on that mux. Do we really want picture quality dropped as broadcasters try to squash in more channels (as per the UK)? A new channel on the Kordia mux would be great, but not on the Mediaworks or TVNZ ones please.

I agree, unless TVNZ is going to start exploiting the powers of MHEG5 etc and use the 'spare encoder' as an access point to more creative content, for instance, could we see at some point TVNZ OnDemand accessible via an MHEG5 application (I seem to recall something about the BBC in the UK looking at doing something like this), making use of network ports in the back of quite a few STBs, and internet connected TVs?

As I recall, from the Freeview services guide thingy-me-jig that outlines the costs of entering the platform, that there is provisions for data/interactive channels on the platform, so this is entirely a possibility.

This got me thinking, so I saved a capture from PID '1202' (U) & PID '1204' ("Spare Encoder"), seems I'm completely wrong about testing interactive services (I thought a simulcast of U may have been used to hide say a data broadcast for testing).

From ffmpeg:

1202/U:
Input #0, mpegts, from '/net/kaki/srv/nfs/njones/1202.mpg':
  Duration: 00:02:25.14, start: 48198.723311, bitrate: 2637 kb/s
  Program 1202
    Stream #0.0[0xfc]: Video: h264 (Main), yuv420p, 720x576 [PAR 16:11 DAR 20:11], 26.20 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc
    Stream #0.1[0x12e](eng): Audio: aac_latm, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16
    Stream #0.2[0x3ea]: Data: [11][0][0][0] / 0x000B
    Stream #0.3[0x3f2](eng): Subtitle: [6][0][0][0] / 0x0006
Stream #0.4[0x406](eng): Subtitle: dvbsub (hearing impaired)

1204/Spare Encoder:
Input #0, mpegts, from '/net/kaki/srv/nfs/njones/1204.mpg':
  Duration: 02:06:11.85, start: 38171.766500, bitrate: 29 kb/s
  Program 1204
    Stream #0.0[0xfe]: Video: h264 (Main), yuv420p, 720x576 [PAR 16:11 DAR 20:11], 29.82 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc
    Stream #0.1[0x130](eng): Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 30 kb/s
    Stream #0.2[0x3ea]: Data: [11][0][0][0] / 0x000B
    Stream #0.3[0x3f2](eng): Subtitle: [6][0][0][0] / 0x0006

(Like another post, ignore the duration/fps etc, ffmpeg trying to be funny I think :P)

From that it looks to me that they may be trialing a switch over to plain ol' AAC codecs, instead of AAC-LATM, that said, the audio on the recording of 1204 sounded like it may have been a bit tinnier than 1202, but I'm not that into sound, so I may be mistaken, or it may have just been the song they were playing.

My understanding is that switching to AAC over AAC-LATM means that there will be better audio support in hardware etc, so, it'll be interesting to see if this becomes an actual change or not.

if they do change to that audio format will make it easy to edit clips they also need to fix aspect ratio from 16:10 to 16:9

No idea, although I would guess it would depend on your video editor, from what I can tell (experience and all), AAC-LATM has pretty poor support in software etc, the crux of the answer to that question, is does your video editing software support AAC better than AAC-LATM  I would guess yes, but really can't answer that.

mkv and mp4 cant support AAC-LATM but they support aac so when i compress the video i can keep the original audio and not have to convert it

Isn't Choice TV going to be on the Kordia mux though?

I was under the impression that they were going to be using space previously used by Stratos..

I've had a look at the stream from Wharite, and at present there is only information in the SDT [other] and NIT tables.

Note: there is an MHEG test channel already on the Kordia mux.

No No, The Stratos frequency is not being replaced by Choice TV, it was even confirmed by Freeview NZ, From the email I got from MediaWorks, the Stratos 21 Frequency is on sale and two broadcasters are discussing a sale. Choice TV is a comepletey different.
