Seems OK to me (v6.7) :-). Just run the desktop app, then everything is either in Tools/Options, or under the device you're backing up.

Maybe my usage is more straightforward?

It provides significantly less information than the old version, and some configuration options have been oversimplified (e.g. scheduling of backups).

What I don't like is the fact that the upgrade seemed to reset a number of values manually set in configuration files. Fortunately, they are still there, and in that regard, the new version is equally as bad as the old. If you're backing up terabytes of binary data, a few small tweaks means the difference between <10Mbs^-1 and >100Mbs^-1.

Fixed that for ya.

The problem is also that the few options that are still there are scattered around seemingly at random with lots of open space on each page that could instead be used to save having to delve 3 or 4 menus deep to get to them. It's like they've been overrun by psychotic minimalists.

I still have the x64 installer from Crashplan Pro 4.9.0 so when they're back up I'll try and retrograde him back to that.

I did this... and it self-downgraded to the new version last night. Hmmm. This may be a job for Netlimiter.

After a couple of years on CrashPlan and more than 5GB I was after something new. CrashPlan never quite caught up with the changes, with ADSL not helping.

After changing to Backblaze and UFB, I was able to back up so much faster. Backblaze can be configured to use many threads, and I found optimal performance with 10 threads. This backed up everything in a few weeks. Still running CrashPlan and it's still slowly getting towards a full backup.

So CrashPlan with its single threaded and bloated app is no match for the lean Backblaze app with multi-threading.

From looking through this thread there seem to be a number of posts where people have installed Backblaze and backed up their data but it doesn't seem like anybody has used Backblaze to restore their data after a system failure - has anybody done this and if so what was your experience with Backblaze? thanks

I haven't used restore after a full system failure but it is very good when you lose specific files due to "user error"

Has anyone here tried SpiderOak One Backup? https://spideroak.com/one/

Looks pretty good - does backup, sync and file sharing in one app. It's cross-platform (supports Linux, Mac, Windows), and is priced reasonably.

I'm already committed to using Arq so I'm not switching, but this looks like a interesting option.

OK, so I've just noticed my CrashPlan backup has fallen way behind. It seems to be much slower than it was, which I'm assuming is the problem.

I figured I'd check that the settings I had previously tweaked hadn't reverted, but to my dismay not all the settings options appear to still be available - so I can't even check them, let alone change them.

I can still change the Java MX size, but the de-duplication and compression settings appear to be gone.

I know in earlier builds of version 6 they were taken out of the client and you had to adjust them via the web, but now they aren't even there.

@SirHumphreyAppleby I know you had previously been getting speeds in excess of 100mbps (as had I), so I was wondering if you still are? Have you (or anyone else reading this) been able to find the de-dupe and compression settings in 6.9.0?

The config file was in %ProgramData%\CrashPlan\conf\my.service.xml for me, but it was the only file with that name, so I assume it's the right one (plus I assume "conf" is short for configuration).

My dataDeDuplication was still set to MINIMAL, and compression was still set to OFF.

My dataDeDupAutoMaxFileSize and dataDeDupAutoMaxFileSizeForWan settings were way different to yours though.

Am I correct that changing them to 1 is basically saying "only try to dedupe if the file is larger that 1 (byte)", so essentially completely disabling dedupe?

Sorry, I had the wrong path. It should be conf. Some old documentation I found mentioned settings being kept in the backupArchives directory, and I must have still had that in my clipboard when I pasted it.

You are correct. That setting causes deduplication to occur only for files of 1 byte or smaller. I don't believe there is a way to completely disable deduplication, but this comes close.

I had those settings in place from the initial backup for CrashPlan Small Business (I had to backup the entire archive again being over 5TB). Speed may improve after a restart, as old versions expire or by compacting the archive, or it might not. If memory usage is significantly reduced, that'll be a clue that it's working.

I've just be going through the CrashPlan log. I had been getting backup speeds consistently faster than 100Mbps (often faster than 200Mbps), then on 15/12/2018 they dropped down to 15Mbps, and since then have been averaging less than 10Mbps.

This didn't coincide with a version upgrade.

@Paul1977 You reminded me that I needed to enable backups of my NAS. I've got 7tb to upload, average speed thus far is around 100Mbit to Crashplan.

I decided Crashplan over Backblaze due to the fact it is unlimited backups and there is a Docker image that I can run on my NAS.
