Hey everyone,
Does anyone rate themslves or have anyone to recommend when it comes to SEO? Have a number of sites that need looking at and customers willing to pay and this isn't my strength!

Thanks!

I have heaps of Indian SOE 'expert' companies always spamming me, so I could refer you to a few of those. Much of it is snake oil, I have found, and if it is done badly, such as tricking search engines, search engines can penalise your site. There are good practices when it comes to designing a website and making it search engine friendly, but that is really websites design, and much of that information can be found in the google webmaster tools. I did refer a client to a couple of NZ SEO companies in the past but they made no difference, and it was expensive. They prepared all sorts of reports and statistics, but it wasn't worth the money. Much of their suggestions were what google recommends anyway. Good content, and lots of other websites linking to yours make more difference than anything else when it comes to search engines, I have found.

Yea that's what I usually say/do. THe more links from quality sites with relevant content is usually the best and over time people start coming back and things go up and up. However I have heard of some amazing stories both 1st and 2nd hand of really expert SEO guys getting traffic up really quickly with a few targetted links and small changes to content.

I am sure there are some, but you don't know whether they are doing thing s to trick search engines. eg. Creating additional websites with specific content to the domain being use, and lots of keywords, that link back to the main website. I have done this myself, and it does work to a degree. Another thing is search engines regularly change the way they do things, so what may be successful one day, may do damage the next.

I think there were a couple of NZ based SEO experts who are users on GPforums.

Otherwise one of the top competitors in the NZ SEO Challenge from back in 2010 maybe?

Once you start with SEO, you have to keep with it as the search engines updated the aspects that are being exploited by SEOs...

The two big ones provide guides on how to best do it, in a way that isn't putting your site at risk of being de-indexed.

IMO there are 2 camps of SEO experts:

1) The apparent minority (it seems by the amount of spam generated by (2) below ) who approach SEO in a sensible way: i.e. ensure site structure is good, nice URLs, appropriate meta tags, improving content\anchors\images\etc, get the word out about the site so you get proper links, etc

2) The majority who try to "trick" the search engines into improving site rankings. These are the ones who give SEO a bad name and spam spam spam.

I know 1 person who fits into category (1) and has the job title to match, but recieve (email) and encounter (online) plenty of spam from (2), lol.

Search Engine algorithms are ever changing these days.

To improve website ranking on a search engine, such as Google, there is a need to put an effective SEO strategy in place and constantly work on its implementation.
The elements of an effective SEO strategy are: Firstly, need to put fresh content on each web page of your website optimised with keywords (not to use too many keywords and justifying placement of each keyword naturally); Secondly, creating natural and consistent backlinks in the form of unique article submission on high ranking article directories, uploading your website information on online directories and popularising your products/services via social bookmarking sites such as Facebook, twitter, reddit, etc.

Therefore, you should look for a reliable, proven local SEO provider for your clients.
