I'm working with a non-profit community-type organisation of around 10k NZ members.

Organisation structure is like:

National body > District body > Local body > Club

I'm looking for a (preferably SaaS) solution to implement the following features with access control based on the above;

  • Document / File Repositories
  • Video Sharing (Training material etc)
  • Shared calendars
  • Email / archiving for the secretary of each club
  • Wiki
Currently looking into:

  • Google Apps
  • Microsoft Sharepoint
Don't really want all 10k users to have to sign up for a Gmail account or similar to access the system

Ideas?

Wordpress can do it, if you find a calendar plugin. Free, then put it on a $10/month hosting plan, VPS, or AWS. There are other open source systems like Joomla, Silverstripe, Drupal, OpenCMS, etc, etc. Best use Google to find a comparison site.

I would say a Hosted sharepoint / exchange solution would most likely be your best option for what you want.

How many of the 10k members will actually need accounts? will they only be viewing content ie only club leaders etc ?

Maybe up to around half will want access to the restricted stuff (which will be most of the content). Some content will be public.

So to clarify there are a handful of different membership types; lets say A, B, C, D

And few different National, Local body, Club Roles; Secretary, Admin, Staff, Member

We want to be able to restrict access to document, wiki pages etc my membership type, role and club.

I'm guessing the first port of call would be mapping out some sort of Active Directory structure then looking at services that can talk to that? (I'm not too familiar with MS enterprise-type stuff).

Sharepoint is pretty much designed for this sort of thing, one of the questions is going to be cost, though.
