As per topic title, who are people currently recommending for small business (5 users max) email hosting?

NZ based hosting preferred but not absolutely necessary.

Office 365 to give you enterprise-grade email with sync across multiple devices including tablets and mobile phones.  $6 per email account per month and your email is effectively backed up to the cloud.

Google support is atrocious. The main reason I moved to Office 365 years ago, and never looked back.

Thanks for the recommendations - looks like one stands out!

Out of curiosity, anyone used Spark Business Mail - popped up when I was searching...

A similar thing to the Office 365 email but you only get 10% of the storage space!

And Spark support doesn't seem too speedy for this service.

Google Apps or Office 365 - depending on whether you prefer Gmail or Outlook I guess!

It also depends what kind of other flexibility you need. Eg it's hard (but not impossible) to set up a catch-all email in 365, but a piece of cake in GApps.

On the plus side for 365, if you need the installed Office apps (Word, Excel, etc) this is an easy upgrade to that package. It's around $19 a month including emails, Office apps, OneDrive for Business etc. That said, GApps includes Google Docs/Sheets/Slides although that is nowhere near as powerful as Office.

Is this not $7.50+GST now? 365 pricing went up 22% in April.

The cheaper P1 plan is still available at $6 (it was $4.90 from memory before the price rise), but you have to hunt for it.  Here is a link: https://products.office.com/en-nz/exchange/compare-microsoft-exchange-online-plans

Very seldom (if ever) need support for Apps, but I would not put Google high on my list of "high support providers". Still have all my email there for various companies.

How do you deal with Office 365/Online Exchange support and Microsoft? How is that handled?

Believe it or not, you can phone Microsoft for Office 365 support (or lodge a case online).  And it's actually not terrible!  Seriously!

I believe you.

You can actually call Google Apps support as well: https://apps.google.com/intx/en_nz/support/

Have used their support, and been pretty happy with it. Have also used support for some other Google services and been happy.

That's news to me.

I last had a serious look at Google Apps 3 years ago but found syncing to a mobile frustrating at the time.  I know that with modern Android phones the syncing is pretty seamless these days.

TBH I remain in love with Outlook for work (though I use and really like GMail for personal stuff)
