Have been using Cubby (suggested by freitasm - I'd give that post +10 now if I could) for syncing between my Windows computers +/- 100GB cloud.

4 good years and $NZ400 later and unfortunately vendor now shutting it down, with LogMeIn Pro supposedly absorbing its functionality for $US250/y for 2 computers and 1TB cloud.

So now looking for alternatives that provide all of the following:

1) sync/backup any folder without having to move it into a specific folder

2) specify some folders sync between computers and backup to cloud, and some sync between computers without cloud backup

3) real-time sync between computers/backup to cloud (e.g. every time my word docx autosaves)

4) not much more than $150/y

Bonus: good Android app for real-time syncing of specified folders with phone only when connected to wifi

Do I need a combination of 2 programmes? Boxifier + Dropbox is all I've found so far - anyone with experience with this and alternatives?

Microsoft OneDrive. No Android automatic sync though but very good app there.

Thanks.

Will I have to use symbolic links (e.g. http://blog.jussipalo.com/2015/03/sync-any-folder-to-onedrive-without.html)?

Only if it's not a special folder such as Documents, Pictures, Videos - these you can redirect in their properties.

Annual licences for Office 365 + 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage can be brought on sale for around $50.

Even if you don't want Microsoft Office, that's cheap.

Good thing about the Office 365 Home licenses is the Office software - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook...

Thanks.

Now trying out Basic edition of OneDrive.

I've tried redirecting

C:\Users\paulchinnz\OneDrive\Documents

to

C:\Users\paulchinnz\Documents

and alas "Can't move the folder because there is a folder in the same location that can't be redirected. Access is denied."

So how do I sync \paulchinnz\Documents without moving it into the OneDrive folder?

Nope, you go to Document properties and change location to be C:\Users\paulchinnz\OneDrive\Documents.

That article is old and does not apply anymore. OneDrive does not need to be mounted if you are using Windows 8/10 as it is automatically added to the system when you login with a Microsoft account or link a Microsoft account to the local account.

Also these are storage, not backup.

Thanks. Just tried that, and presented with 2 questions.
First is about moving all the files into OneDrive folder. I don't want this (as per original post I want to sync/backup any folder without having to move it into a specific folder).
Second is about redirecting, which sounds more like it. However, it's simply pointed my paulchinnz\Documents to paulchinnz\OneDrive\Documents, which remains an empty folder.

Apologies if I've missed something obvious.

OneDrive (as Google Drive) will require folders to be under the OneDrive\ folder. Moving Documents into OneDrive\Documents is transparent for your system. As soon as you change the target location Windows will automatically open that folder as your Documents folder. As far as applications go, these will open your Documents folder, regardless of it being [user]\Documents or [user]\OneDrive\Documents.

It's a compromise on the "no move files" but it's transparent.

And further now I can't reverse the change location i.e. redirect paulchinnz\Documents to paulchinnz\OneDrive\Documents because of alert as per my post #1697138.

Wait a bit for OneDrive to do its stuff, make sure there is not applications running (so no open files) then try again.

Thanks for all your help. Just to explain my preceding confusion: I'd thought you'd understood from my original post that I didn't want to move files, and hence you were offering a solution constrained by that requirement. Anyway all makes sense now. I'll take a closer look at Boxifier, but might come back to OneDrive.
