Hi all

I own a domain name through Metaname and given the amount of spam I’m getting through my current old xtra account, I’m finally biting the bullet and I have signed up for a GSuite account so I can use my domain as my primary email address going forward.

The Gsuite walkthrough asks me to add the MX records to my domains control panel. I’m having a bit of trouble actually finding the control panel, or something that looks applicable on the Metaname website. I emailed Metaname over the weekend and rang them on Monday but to date, I haven’t heard from them.

Are any of you learned people able to help me with this?

Have you added new records to a zone?

I am in AKL and have a few meetings until around 3pm, can look at this later if you want.

If the NS are not custom (as in you are using the Metaname NS) then you have to edit the zone to create the DNS records. Have a look around and let us know if you need more hands-on help on this.

Beside your domain name click DNS which should take you to the zone configuration page

Under Advanced Configuration click Add a Record and enter the records required by GSuite

Click Save Changes when you are done.

You'll need to wait a while for the GSuite DNS servers to update before email starts to flow.

The control panel is in your domain management under DNS:

Essentially you're wanting to click on "Managed DNS" and do the following:

Note - in my case I don't use Metaname DNS so it'll look a bit different for you. In the "name" field put a @ and it'll populate your domain name. There are other records to add (such as a cname so you can go to "mail.domain.com") as well as mail security (SPF TXT record, DMARC etc) which is essential. It is pretty straight forward to do DNS management.

Also - for the mx records and CNAME records it is important to finish the domain with a full-stop like I have done above.

Thanks all. Perhaps I'm missing something (or perhaps one or another part of the process is taking it's time) but I've updated the records as per Michael's post above (excluding the spf, dmarc, cname etc which I don't know anything about) but it's unable to verify. The DNS records apparently update at 5 minutes past the hour and I've gone through at least two of those since I entered the data.

I note MackinNZ comment that it may take some time.

You'll need SPF set up - this is easy: https://support.google.com/a/answer/33786?hl=en

It is just a TXT record in Metaname but follow through that.

The DNS is not "pushed" but "pulled". Records have a TTL - a timer that when expired should force serves to try again. Perhaps use https://mxtoolbox.com/ to test your records since your local machine or DNS may be stalled.

It's saying it can't find a server.

Something must be missing then. A DNS change should be as quick as possible (respecting the TTL) and the tool actually always gets fresh records. Unless the Metaname Zone is only generated a few times a day...

Here's a picture of what everything looks like. I've blocked out my actual domain for obvious reasons but it is "surname.nz." There's a trailing dot with no www. or anything before it.

Looks alright to me.

I've found however that Google is a little slow at checking DNS records and often caches them for quite some time. If you flick me the domain name via DM I can check this on my end.

Line 2 might have a full stop at the end, but lines 3 to 7 also need a full stop after .google.com. Looking at michaelmurfy's screenshot, they should look like

aspmx.l.google.com.

alt4.aspmx.l.google.com.
