Asking on behalf of a friend who has a startup. He is after a content management system where he can have a internal site and a customer facing site. He has been trying to use Drupal but its not working out for him.

Any suggestions?

You could do it with WordPress, but if you want the internal/external sites to be on the same URL, you'll need a bunch of plugins/custom hosting.

What exactly are they after?

I think you are after Joomla. It has ACL (access control lists) and granular user permissions. You can setup hierarchies of users to view and edit content based on user groups.

Cheers, Matt.

Just remember that 'internal facing' is just that - facing, there is always a moderate chance of CMS's being breached unless the admins are very proactive at keeping current with updates (so be careful of any sensitive data).

Depends what the internal facing is to be used for, but I'm a big fan of Atlassian Confluence ($10/month for up to 10 users) if they're looking more along the lines of Enterprise Content Management. Might be a stretch to use Atlassian as a public customer facing homepage though, albeit doable.

"He has been trying to use Drupal but its not working out for him."

If you could explain why it's not working out for him that might be good.

Drupal is very much a "framework" these days and you have to really mould it to what you want.

I converted my personal blog to it years and years ago and still use it to this day, not really because I want to, but because I am not going to try to export 18 years worth of content into something else now.

But Drupal's very powerful and it would be quite "easy" to do what he wants with it.  There's some very granular permissions etc available, but a lot of the clever stuff requires modules to truely harness its power.

Anyway, what didn't work with Drupal for him?

Drupal probably hasnt worked out for him as he doesnt have time or resources available to 'mould' it. A ready to use system where he can get started asap is what he had in mind. I will suggest he look at wordpress and joomla.
