I did the upgrade to Android 12 today. All in all it's a bit of a non-event. It's like Android for dummies. Larger text, simpler controls, more keypresses to do many things. I'd like to remove the weather widget from the lock screen, and change the lock screen clock type, otherwise no surface differences.

It applied fine like a regular patch. Not sure how long it took, I was doing something else, an hour at most. I didn't lose any data, I didn't even get logged out of my apps.

If you want to turn off weather on the Android 12 home screen this worked for me (from here)

  • activate pixel launcher if you have another launcher
  • disable all features in "at a glance" in that launchers options( long tapping home screen)
  • change launcher back if desired

I have found another issue. On Android 11 on my pixel 4 XL when I connect to my car's Bluetooth it brought up Android auto. On Android 12 there is no more Android auto but something called driving mode. So I try to set the phone so that when it connects to the  car's Bluetooth it starts up driving mode but that never works.

I  even changed the settings so that to ask me before turning on driving mode.  The prompt appears I press ok and the screen flashes and nothing happens. If I ignore the dialogue box it's supposed to start in 10 seconds but then the same thing happens - a quick dash the quick flash and then nothing.

if I statup AA manually it says AA is only availabe for car screens and on your phone try Google Assistant driving mode instead.

Anybody else have this problem?

Since none of my family or colleagues run Andriod 12 so I can't ask them to test this can I ask any GZ'er to try this out for me? I htink it's a bug but it could be just my Pixel 4XL which has never worked properly in Driving Mode since Android 11.

Go to Connection Preferences and then select Driving Mode

Turn it on and let me know what you get.

For me the screen flashes briefly and then stays where it is.

But if I say "Hey Google Let's Drive" I get Driving Mode.  What I want is for Driving Mode to be activated when the phone connects to the car bluetooth but it won't even start manually now.

Thanks

Okay thanks

What happens if you start up Android Auto do you get the screen

Then choose the driving mode option

And also if you say hey Google let's drive

does it go into driving mode?

Thanks

On my Pixel 3 with Android 12 I have 2 options for driving mode behaviour : 1. Open Android Auto (does nothing because I don't have a car with Android Auto to connect to) and 2. Turn on do-not-disturb. With behaviour 2 selected, I can connect my car's bluetooth and it will automatically turn on do not disturb. In the driving mode settings pressing the "Turn on now" button also enables do not disturb. So I guess that part is working.

If I say "ok google - let's drive" it opens Google maps and says driving mode enabled (but doesn't turn on do not disturb?). I don't get the driving mode launcher button in maps either.

If I open the old android auto app and press "Try driving mode" button it takes me to a support page.

Interesting. Up till Android 11 you didn't need a head unit to open AA. It would open up a phone version which I used to use all the time. It looked like this

From there as you can see you could see missed calls, missed messages, play messages etc.

In Android 12 it's been removed and replaced by Assistant Driving mode.

I have Open Android Auto set for Driving Mode.

Pressing the button on that screen does nothing like you but if I say Hey Google Let's Drive I get this screen

i also get this screen when I open AA, and get asked to try Driving Mode

Driving Mode is okay but not as good as AA in Android 11 and earlier since you can still listen/reply  to messages using voice, make calls and listen to media.  What would be good to have it start up automatically rather than ever say Hey Google Let's Drive

In Android 11 I used to use the Android Auto app occasionally, mostly on long trips.

The driving mode for assistant in Android 12 looks cool, but no matter what I try I can't get it to work.

If you still have Android Auto on your phone then try the following. Go to the settings, apps, Android Auto and delete all the storage and cache.

Then start up Android Auto and you should get the screen about not available anymore do you want to try assistant driving mode.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I get the screen about Android Auto not being available anymore, but when I select Try Driving mode, it just goes to a support page. Maybe its a country location thing, or because I'm using a Workspace account, I'm not sure.

I installed Android 12 a couple of weeks ago. This morning my Pixel 4a is offering me the Android 12 upgrade again, a 1.69GB download. Anyone else seeing this?

I've got a 23.4MB security update available on my 4a running 12, but no full redownload option.
