pinkbellbird: ahh well in your case, if def makes sense to have an IP67 rated phone. Guess it would be the S5 then? Or wait till next years releases?

not sure if what other brands are doing IP rated phones. I just dont bother looking at a whole lot of other brands. Samsung has won my heart - lolz!

I have used note 1, note 2 and now note 3.

I tried Xperia Z for a short time but I prefer the note screen size. The problem with making this phone 'waterproof' it adds to the size remarkably.

Not in a rush to upgrade. I will wait and see.

I bet it would be pretty well guaranteed that all next years Samsungs releases will be IP67 rated - they'd be nuts not to!

So, whos into the Note Edge??? Thats stolen my heart lol - the painful wait now

I do agree, even though Im an eager beaver to get my mits on one, I will be inclinded to 'demo' one out in store before I buy - if it does end up feeling THAT awful, il opt for the Note 4. But fingers crossed its awesome!

I just had a look at the Note Edge review videos for the first time. I like it. I like the fact that it makes the multitask way better.

I don't see the reason to upgrade note 3 to note 4. But there are plenty of reasons to upgrade to Note Edge.

thing is, there have ben no reviews of the Edge running 3rd party apps - if the edge notifications and quick options are ALWAYS visible, (running like a permanent bar) then this is great, you can see other notifications and controls WHILE running your game, or other app that youre in - perfect.

but that would mean the touchwiz interface is somehow running concurrently with the app in the foreground... which would mean some clever coding right?

the thing is, if this doesnt happen, then native 3rd party apps (games, etc) will simply display "full screen" and wrap all the way around the edge...... rendering the extra functionality of the edge strip useless when running 'fullscreen' apps..... so it would only be useful when running within the touchwiz launcher????? if thats the case then it defeats alot of the functionality. the edge section really needs to function as a distinct and seperate 'second screen' thats always on regardless of main screen content.. in order to be always useful..... (to see notification messages... tweets or whatever... to be able to toggle things..... thats my thoughts....???

That's not quite how manufacturer skins work. Touchwiz isn't just a launcher, it's an entire framework with many components. You can replace the launcher with a third party alternative and the sidebar will still work, because they're separate parts of the Touchwiz framework. It works the same way that the notification bar does, or the multitasking UI - always the same regardless of which apps you're running or moving between.

Whether the unique hardware feature is useful beyond the out-of-the-box featureset will depend how well Samsung convinces developers to use the Note Edge's SDK.

lofreq, the 'Edge' screen is a completely separate screen, it appears to be all in one but its controlled as a stand alone screen.

Samsung have already said they will release the SDK pack to developers etc to get other apps functional for the Edge Screen

from Forbes.com article: The Note Edge is a bit quirkier, a phone with a ticker-like bar that runs horizontally on the edge of the phone. That display can be changed to show email or other top-priority information like the weather, and turns into an alarm clock at night. Samsung also announced an open Edge SDK for developers to play with the new bar.

thanks for the info guys. i thought the Edge's panel was one entire piece of flexible AMOLED, with one corner simply wrapped round the side. as opposed to one flat amoled screen, and a second 'flexible' curved amoled panel, with no visible seam (quite a feat in itself in that case)

if thats the case, and the Edge strip is 'always on' regardless, i think thats pretty revolutionary. wouldnt that make it the first smartphone with seperate dual displays that can be drawn to concurrently!? even those phones that ran dual screens, or LCD+EInk, didnt run concurrently and integrated into the main OS skin, to my knowledge...

would that then suggest only the main flat AMOLED has the stylus digitizer surface built in, and the curved section will not respond to the S-Pen...? or have they then somehow spread the digitizer surface across the whole thing?

the page describes the Edge strip as 'always on', so you can 'watch a movie and still get notifications' so that reinforces the seperate nature of the edge screen. however these "notifications" would only be what Touchwiz intercepts and passes to the edge screen surely. because the standard Android notificatoin bar still remains across the top of the main display (clock, battery, and standard app notifications)

so for example, if you were playing a game that sent game notifications to the standard top android notification window while you were watching a movie.... you wouldnt see them on the side display, because the game will not be written to push notifications to the edge display - only to the stock android notifications windowshade...? if i have understood that correectly then the functionality isnt as great as it sounds until all devs decide to incorporate the edge SDK as an output option for their apps... which is a long shot of course.

which shows what appears to be a full screen web browser... and there, there is NO intrusion from the edge bar - the browser extends right to the edge of the, um, Edge. the photo gallery in full screen also overrides the edge bar. so do we interpret from this that this only happens because its demonstrating the built in browser, and built in gallery app, which have been written to take over both the main screen and edge bar, for certain activities? meaning that, if i go ahead and install Chrome, and QuickPic, and emulate the same thing, i will end up seeing the Edge display strip rather than a "full screen" experience??

It's a single screen with a curve as far as I'm aware. Due to the way OLED panels work, it doesn't really matter whether it's a separate piece (It would, I suspect, be more efficient not to duplicate ribbon cables and display drivers, however). The software only needs to illuminate the pixels on the display that it's actually using, as opposed to LCDs which have backlights that are either on or off, illuminating all or none of the pixels.

Samsung attempted this previously with an original Galaxy S variant for Verizon called the Continuum, which was actually a single screen with paint (of all things) over one part of it. This is a much more elegant solution.

The samsung link you provided, is interesting - the samsung site says its always on - I somehow wonder if that photo is an earlier render, i see that theyve used that photo on the site when showing specs about the screen:

Thats the only pic ive seen that has not shown the 'Edge' as 'always on'. Im taking it that those pics are purely to showcase the screen quality, for what ever reason they designed to edit out the edge screen for that particular segment on the site.

Id like Samsung to hurry up with an actual intro video, they only have one for the Note 4 on their site & youtube. The video links for the Note Edge only show the Note 4 ones so far.

have you guys compared the iPhone 6+ with the Note 4, Note 3 or even Note 2???

I always thought apple were the the ones pushing boundaries & miles ahead of the game. Think they are seriously being outdone these days... seems 6+ is on par with the Note 2/Note3 specs at a push!
