Hi guys,

I just bought a new Samsung Galaxy S2 from Vodafone a couple of weeks ago and im very happy with it, although battery draining is a bit annoying.
I previously owned an iphone 4 jailbroken with lockscreen info, HTC weather widgets and the likes.
Im trying to get arabic language support on the S2.

I guess the question now is to Root or not to Root?

Im still learning about the S2 - there is this jig everyone is talking about which resets the rom counter. Others are mentioning a possibility of hidden counter but its likely to be just rumors.

everybodylovesfebs: I'm having bit of trouble understanding this from reading instructions on how to install LeoMar/VillainRom from xda forums.

I'm currently on modem XXKG1 and kernel Ninp.

In order for me to install LeoMar, all I have to do is download the zip file, boot into CWM and install from there regardless Leomar is based on XXKG3 and I'm currently on XXKG1?

Also a general question,

1. when installing new rom, given that my current kernel is compatible do I just have to install rom via CWM?

2. in case if kernel is not compatible and I need to install new kernel, do I just install new kernel through ODIN? And what happens to the current rom?

1. yes.

2. yes. Unless the new rom has a kernel with it (most do) and it'll overwrite the old one anyway.

hey Brendan thanks for that yes I've been following closely at that document.

Just a little confused when installing a villain rom, it says

"First things first, check what stock rom you are on, go to menu > settings > about and look for key phrases like "KE2" or "KE4" etc this is your kernel number. Make sure this is not the number in the "baseband" line as this is your MODEM version (radio) not kernel."

I cannot find similar numbers to KE2 or ke4 anywhere else other than Baseband version where it says - I9100XXKG1. So I'm just giong to download cf-root for KG1 and later on flash new modem kg3

Without complicating myself, from what I understood from the doc file is -

1. boot into cwm and make a backup of current rom
2. start up odin and install cf-root (because villain rom needs this)
3. boot into cwm recovery mode and install villain rom zip file ( my question is IS this 3rd step possible? because I just flashed a whole new kernel over my existing one, did that screw up my existing cwm?)

Just got my new GS2, coming from the GS. Going to try root it and just like with my GS having issues with Odin.

Have installed kies to get drivers, closed kies run odin, gone into download and plugged in. After I click start it just stalls on setupconnection. I had the same issue with the GS and ended up having to go the heimdall route, but its just getting annoying.

Is there anything else I can try to get this working? Even with kies I cannot get it to connect over usb, yet it can connect with wifi no problems...

When you start Odin then plug in the phone do you get the yellow COM1 light up?

How quickly is your battery lasting? Mine makes it through a day without any real issues. In light use it'll make it 3 days.

I rooted my since it meant I could easily backup and tweak certain settings. Takes like 10mins and saw no real downsides.

Yep, lights up then just stays on setupconnection

Not confused, but i think you may be a little! lol (but that's good for me, it illuminates parts of the faq that may need work).

The FAQ primarily deals with the FIRST time you rooted your phone; subsequent flashes are assumed (perhaps wrongly) that the user has some more understanding.

If you have CWM installed already, you just use that to flash your new zip file rom. No need to install special kernels or etc - every rom I have seen comes with it's kernel built in. So it doesn't matter what your current build number is, or kernel. They will be getting replaced with compatible versions anyway.

In the faq i say that the preferred version info is the build number; but the modem version can atleast give you some idea. But it can also be deceptive - even stock rom's have had different versions for rom and modem.

If you are flashing CF-root for the first time with the plan to instantly go to a custom rom (e.g. you are not wanting a rooted version of a stock rom), it pretty much doesn't matter WHAT version you flash; you are only using it to get to cwm to then install a whole new set up in the custom rom you are installing.

Your step 1: yes. 2, not needed; 3 yes.

e.g. make a backup and then, flash the zip with villain in it. Done.

I think you computer or windows might be having issues. Also check the cable.

hey thanks for that information now i'm on villain rom

on xda forum villain rom installation instruction says:

"Step 3 - Updating CF-ROOT Kernel

Now you are on VillainRom you will need to update the kernel to match the rom. At the time of writing this is the KG1 kernel (but check in IRC or on the rom post if your not sure). This time you will want to keep this as a .zip file.

First of all, install VRTweaks from http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/sh...v1.3.1-(29-May), and install it.

Place the CF-ROOT .zip file onto your phone and then open the "CWM" app, once open go to "flash kernel" and point it to that .zip file.

The phone will reboot."

any ideas? I'm off to bed now but let me know if I still need to flash kernel to cf root, after installing villainrom via cwm, I'm still on same previous ninp designgears cognition kernel. I'll download cf root kernel and update via cwm if needed.

Is there a way to sort the app draw alphabetically? Other than putting it in list view? I usually have it in list view but it always reverts back after reboot and randomly during the day sometimes

I made backup and flashed the zip with villain, but my kernel wasn't replaced. It is still ninp designgears one which I got with Cognition rom.

EDIT: Just noticed I don't have CWM app pre installed as well as it doesn't let me copy/paste/edit files in root folders, I used ES file explorer it gives me access but no editing. I did enable root access in settings but it said "root test failed".

Great! Just found out I downloaded the "lite" version of VR, I installed VR2.0 Lite instead of 2.3.0.

So I'm going to re install VR2.3.0 by going into CWM and hoping the kernel will be replaced with CF-root. Unless I have to do it manually afterwards.

I've never had to do that with any of them.

Flash the zip file in cwm. Then, if you like, you can flash a new kernel (ninphetamine say), done.
