I've decided that it's probably time that I got a bit more clever with my handling of passwords on all the websites that I belong to, so I've been looking into password manager apps.

I'd like to find an Android app that will let me put in a website's name, URL, username, password.  If the app had a password generator then that would be good too.  But here's the kicker, I'd really like an app that can put a copy of the database of passwords somewhere online, such as my Google Drive account (of course the database should be encrypted).  Then if anything ever happens to the database on my phone I can easily restore it.  If the remote storing could be automatic or built into the app (i.e. I tap a button to initiate the transfer) that that would be better than me having to manual do an upload.

And the icing on the cake would be if there was a Windows version of the app that could also share the database of passwords so I could access it from a PC.

Any suggestions?

I like KeePass, and you can use this on Android with Google Drive quite successfully:

+1 for KeyPass. I use it on my work PC, laptop, iPad and Android phone. I sync it up with my Dropbox account to ensure all devices have the most up-to-date set of passwords. It works extremely well on Windows PCs with the keyboard shortcuts. It is pretty good on Android too, with the username and password copied to shortcuts in the task bar so you can easily log into apps/websites. The iOS app is not quite as slick, you have to keep jumping between apps to copy the user and password across.

I feel very secure in the knowledge my passwords are effectively un-crackable!

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments.

For KeePass on Android, are you using the Keepass2Android app or KeePassDroid?

KeyPassDroid - wasn't actually aware of the other one.

From what I can see on the Google Play descriptions, KeyPassDroid has beta support for reading/writing .kdbx and KeePass 2.x, while Keepass2Android has full support. Just wondering if I should be worried about the "beta support"?

I haven't had any issues with KeyPassDroid. YMMV.

Hmmm, apparently Keepass2Android has built-in syncing with FTP and WebDAV. The Windows version also has FTP syncing, so maybe that's the best way for me to go.

Well I spent yesterday afternoon setting up KeePass and Keepass2Android. I put my password file on my website and both apps access it via FTP. I've got my work PC, my home netbook and PC, and my Android phone all working with it. I've also set up triggers to automatically save copies of the password database to various places whenever I open the database.

All in all I'm very pleased with how it works across my various devices.

Now all I need to do is enter in all my logins and then go through and change the passwords to automatically generated ones so that each site uses a different password. Big job!

Thanks for the info Murrary, I am keeping an eye on how you get on and may follow you...

Would be keen for continued updates on the pain points and solutions.

At the moment I'm going through all of the websites that I gave memberships on and setting them up in KeePass.  At the same time I'm telling my browser's password manager to forget the password that I'd previously told it to remember, and getting KeePass to generate a new random password.  Then I have to log into the website and do a password change to the new random password.

A lot of work but at least it will mean that if one password gets compromised then I don't have to worry about baddies getting into my other accounts.

I use aWallet Cloud myself. Easy to use, you can set up your own categories and specify the fields you want/don't etc. It can synch with Dropbox or Google Drive.

Hmm, just changed my password on the ASB's site and discovered that they've got very specific password requirements. It must be 8 characters (no more and no less) and must contain at least 2 letters and 2 numbers. Surely forcing passwords to be exactly 8 characters can't be terribly good?!? I would have thought letting the user choose between, say, 8 and 20 characters in length would have been better?

Yes, I had noticed that myself and through it was ludicrous.

Lastpass is better given it fills forms in automatically for you, and is more secure than using your browsers password manager
