I have added my Gmail account to my email account on my phone.

So to be clear I am opening up Gmail through the normal email and not the Gmail app.

This is due to my ihug email being disbanded.

So my issue is that gmail is now downloading all of my emails from the last 6 year at 25 emails each time.

How can I stop this.

1st turn the phone off.

then go to google mail and change the settings for email.

go to settings

then to the forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

If you are using POP then change the setting to "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on"

If you are using IMAP then I don't know.

I think it's more than this... I am bit confused with your post.

Do you want/need your old emails somewhere else after the account is closed? If yes, are you using Gmail to access the old email and copy the messages across?

Also using Gmail through your Android standard email app is fine - the Gmail app itself is similar and some OEM will customise their email apps. Up to you to decide which one to use. However there's a setting there to say how many emails you will want synchronised to your smartphone. I use 30 days but if you set "All of them"... Remember this is just to sync the Gmail account to your smartphone, not to synchronise the old email to your Gmail account - this is done on the Gmail website in Settings.

Not sure how to explain it better.

My Ihug email is closing down so I am forwarding my emails to my Gmail account.

I have all the emails I wish to keep.

I have added Gmail to my smart phone but I want to stop it downloading every email from the last few years which is what is happening now on my phone with about 25 emails each time, that I delete then on refresh it downloads the next 25.

I want to stop this process and only download new emails from now.

So one of the setting you talk about is

However there's a setting there to say how many emails you will want synchronised to your smartphone.

Were do I find this setting please ?

What email app are you using to connect to Gmail if it's not the Gmail app? If it's another how are you connecting to Gmail? POP3? If so you need to look at sync settings.

Why are you not just using the Gmail app?

so the reason I am not using the gmail app is due to the fact that I have a couple of email accounts and I find it easier to check them from one location.

So on the sync only gives me these options.

I can just use gmail but prefer not to.

If you are using POP then you have no control of how many emails are downloaded. It will download all of them - also make sure you set the option to leave emails on the server ON otherwise they're download to your smartphone and deleted from the server.

I would not use POP or IMAP. If the email app doesn't support the Gmail protocol I'd switch all accounts to the GMail app.
