The Galaxy S10 release is little over 2 weeks away, but reliable leaks confirm that Samsung are going to up-size both the S10 (from 5.8" to 6.1") and the S10+ (from 6.2" to 6.4").

So this now means that after 20 Feb, there will be no Android flagships under 6", leaving Apple the only handset maker with a sub 6" flagship offering.

There will also be a S10 lite at 5.8" (Samsung's equivalent of the iPhone XR), but this will be a down-spec'ed phone from the S10. As long as the spec compromise is not too great, I will sadly probably opt for the lite as I want the smaller physical size.

Anecdotally, I see more of the smaller S8s and S9s than the plus models, which seems to suggest the smaller phone is preferred. Are we being led into bigger handsets against our wishes or am I a dying breed that wants to keep my phone in a smaller pocketable package?

I not only want my phone kept "small" (I prefer being able to navigate the entire screen with my thumb when operating single handed) but I want it fatter - as in I would rather have extended battery life and am not interested in manufacturers chasing the "thinnest phone" prize

Yes I want a compact pocketable phone too. I had the S5 mini which was okay, but nothing special.
If I want a big screen I'll use my iPad.

Using an A3 (2017) which is doing a great job so far.

Sony are the only manufacturer still supporting a "compact" phone format. A XZ4 compact was expected at MWC, but it seems Sony have possibly (but not officially yet) abandoned the form factor because nobody cares about small sized phones any longer.

I had an original A5 (2015) which I really liked but battery got to the point of being useless. Replaced it with an A8, which is larger, but not uncomfortably so.

On the other hand, I've had a J4+ foisted upon me as a work phone (replacing an ancient Nokia Windows Phone), which is heavy, has a big clunky case and requires a shuffling and balancing act on the palm of your hand to even try and use it one-handed. Sad...

I remember when I brought a Note II and everyone laughed at me for my ridiculously large phone.  Have you checked the phone comparison web site as it might not be physically larger if they have reduced the top and bottom chin and made it all screen.  I am with you on the thicker phone with bigger battery life thing.  I brought the note 9 which was thicker than the note 8 but has a 4000mah battery and I am totally happy with my choice.  I even keep it in the samsung protective case which is thicker than the spigen case I also own because I am happy to have the kickstand at the expense of some phone thickness.

Farewell to the last sub-6 inch Android flagship

Pixel 3 is current at 5.7. Pixel 4 is anyone's guess.

Granted they're still big but modern 6"+ phones are not really any bigger than the 5.x" phones of yesteryear due to thinner bezels and the removal of physical buttons.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 6.9 inch Xiaomi Mi Max 3 ... I want a big phone now that I don't really use a laptop or separate tablet.

Small hands, small pockets, and / or good eyes.

For the reasons quoted above, single handed use and pocketability. I regularly keep mine in a breast pocket in my shirt. It's a convenient easy to reach place to put it when I'm sitting down without a bench or table to place it on.

If I want bigger I have a tablet.

So, here are the dimensions for the upcoming S10 range. The S10e is almost exactly the same size as my S7, so is perfect sizing for me.

The slightly bigger S10 is pretty much identical to the Huawei P20 which is bearable and at my absolute max for size, but something I may consider to pick up the better camera set up.

Galaxy S10e- 5.8-inch display, 142.5 x 70.5 x 8.1mm
Galaxy S10- 6.1-inch display, 149.9 x 71.6 x 8.1mm
Galaxy S10+- 6.4-inch display, 157.0 x 75.3 x 8.1mm
