Look pretty good on paper to this long term Xperia fan, maybe Sony have finally woken up. Whack naming convention though (yeah I know aligns with cameras).

Maybe now @sbiddle upgrades his phone. And get to use Vodafone 5G...

The HDMI-in combined with 4g/5g is a perfect marriage of technology.   This will be popular with the vlogging/media crowd.   I wonder if they've built anything on the cloud side to enable real-time streaming (as opposed to today's streaming services and their 10-second delays).

Nice something actually useful -- this is different from the usual spec bumps and gimmicks.

Interesting. As a Sony mobile fan, these look intriguing. Still a zero percent chance of being able to buy them in NZ though sadly..

I don't know, compared with how much their competitors have advanced, I feel like they are still trading on their brand name. I also feel like Sony Mobile are maybe one or two bad quarters away from a re-structure.

The specs are solid for this day and age, but so far, not seeing anything to really distinguish it in the market. And those bezels... I guess we will only know once the reviews come in if the whole phone experience is more than just the sum of its components. It will also be interesting to see how 5g is implemented on the Pro as well.

Every time a new Sony phone is released, I really wanted to like them since my old Xperia X10 way back with the slide-out keyboard (Android 2.3, yeaaaahhh boi), but every time I look they just don't stack up against competitors phones in features for the price. And I feel like I have the same gripes about them every time.

But if you are a Sony fan and nothing else will do, I can see how this might look like a bright spot on the horizon compared to the last couple of years.

The real question is given how much Sony's mobile business has dried up, will we actually get this in NZ? And if we do, is it actually at a price anyone will pay?

I loved the compacts a few years back, but for a company that specialises in camera sensors, I feel they miss the mark on this.

Nah, Sony exited mobile in AU and NZ ~2 years ago after some really bewildering moves.

It's a shame, they make nice products, but as you say they always seem to be playing catch-up to last year's standard featuresets. Nice to see a smartphone vendor returning to headphone jacks though.

I was hoping you should show up to confirm or deny haha.

At worst I feel like you can't accuse them of cheapening the brand for their existing fans, but they seem to be happy just catering a few niche markets (Sony/premium-but-no-gimmicks/quasi-professional fans). According to ArsTechnica, their last quarter results were a bit grim.

Sorry, I'll stop trying to dampen enthusiasm. Some more specs and tidbits popped up on Anandtech.

They look great, apart from ongoing perseverence with the 21:9 ratio

The Xperia 1 II looks like my dream phone. A shame it won't have a AU/NZ release.

Headphone jack, plentiful RAM, large battery, decent camera, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and most importantly a width which means it isn't impossible to hold one-handed!
