Well I got my HTC Desire (ex Clove) and all it took was 3 days from debit account($NZ770) to arrival - best of all no GST! Its running 2.1 and so far I think I am going to love this phone.

However I am a total (65year old) phone Numpty so I need some advice

I am unable to connect to the Internet for Google Mail or any other purpose.

On my old Vodafone connected RAZR V3X I never had to set the phone up for internet access - just clicked the link and it connected automagically. However when I tap the Browser icon on the Desire it tells me Web Page not Available and the site may be down or check that I have a SIGNAL/DATA connection.

The manual tells me that the phone is automatically configured to use my providers data network and a couple of days ago I got a letter from Vodafone telling me they had doubled my data - so I do have a data connection.

What am I doing wrong?

I'd suggest you have a look through the HTC Desire Tips'n'Tricks thread - there is plenty of info there. Admittedly it's quite a long thread but the necessary info is not too far into the thread.

Android user, software developer, a semi-typical (not a gamer) geek, and a Bernese Mountain Dog nut!

Thanks for the pointer to the APN info. I assumed this would have been setup automagically but I guess not. The manual seemed to indicate this was the case and was the way my old phone worked.

I have located the Access point names in the settings and it is blank. I was still searching the site when I got the reply

I have sorted the settings from the Tips & tricks - now to load them and see what happens.

The settings are normally preconfigured by Vodafone, but since you got a "generic" phone you need to do that yourself. That's why your old phone worked "out of the box".

I'm assuming you gave it the google account login when you first turned it on? "Touch the Android to begin"?

The Internet "APN" definitions can be found in Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks". (usually - on most Android phones.)

If you couldn't - no worries - skip it and complete the APNs. After that you can set up your account.

Vodafone only need a couple of things filled in like APN Name "Vodafone" and the APN "www.vodafone.net.nz" up the top for the APN itself.....and usually "default, supl" down the bottom for APN Type. That alone should be enough to get you on the Net.

You'll also need a "Vodafone-MMS" APN to send / receive PXTs, but for the Internet alone, the first one is usually all you need.

Or do it via Wifi....which *should* "just work". If you don't have a wifi AP at home, then you may wish to get one ($70 at PB Tech) and plug it into your router. Reading the instructions should be enough to set that up.

Android phones have a massive built-in APN database in them and will usually identify the correct APN for the provider, but not for poor little NZ apparently in most cases. Interestingly, the Nexus One had entries for Vodafone built-in, but not for XT. Looks like the Desire doesn't have entries for Vodafone either which is none too helpful.

You should be able to merge the APN settings for Vodafone, just add the MMSC & MMS proxy settings to the primary APN and change the APN type to "default,supl,mms". It works fine with separate entries but is quicker with just the one as it stops it turning the APN on/off (to "switch") when it's sending/receiving MMS's and stays on the same primary APN instead.

Ahh, OK. I haven't moved to Android yet (I was going to get a Milestone but it's been delayed yet again...) so I could only assume that it was the same as a "normal" phone. Thanks for the correction, it never hurts to know more :)

Now to have a look at HTC Sync and maybe download Swype.

I thought that I needed that to Sync files and to also load Apps downloaded via my PC - the cost of a download via my mobile is too expensive if I go over my data allowance.

Is there another way of doing this- have not got that far in the manual but it only mentions HTC Sync for that anyway.

Best I start another topic for this before I get a rap over the knuckles for not doing so.
