OK, so quite a few of you are now asking me via PM about how to get onto the JPK Froyo build, and as much as I like to help everyone I'm afraid I can't be everyones personal IT helpdesk on this issue.

If you're interested, and I'd suggest your should be based on my experience with JPK, then you need to head to this thread at XDA developers - it'll give you all the how to's, caveats, and cautions you need to know. EDIT: Ok, apparently it doesn't mention you should uninstall any lagfixes you may have running on your 2.1 firmware before the upgrade - definitely do that first! There are instructions for removing the Voodoo lagfix at the official site, and XDA has instructions for removing the other lagfixes in their various official threads.

Once you're up and running you'll be able to do cool stuff like this:

A couple of things I did after flashing to JPK is to change the country code of the nv_data.bin file (you'll have taken a backup of the /efs before flashing and this file is included).

Instructions for that are here. According to the Wiki (below) to use Kies to upgrade, my country code needs to be seen as OPS (my phone was an Optus Australia phone). I had checked the nv_data.bin file *before* I flashed to JPK so I knew what the 3 character country code was before it changed to KOR.

A problem I had was AppBrain no longer recognised my phone. This meant it still believed I was running Eclair 2.1 and I couldn't access apps for 2.2 unless I went to the Market.

I got around that problem by following the instructions in this Wiki. Scroll down to the section "Restricted Market Access".

Once I did this I ended up with a SECOND list of apps. I deleted the first list as it was no longer current and just left the list that represented the apps on Froyo 2.2.

The Wiki includes quite a few handy little tid-bits our Aussie neighbours have put together.

I'll probably have a go at this tonight. Pretty much have my head around the phone now. Ready to make the leap....after a nandroid backup. :-)

I like that we don't replace the stock recovery....so any update that comes through won't be blocked. Some see that as a disadvantage, but I prefer it provided the update gives me the chance to say "now or later".

So if we install JPK now we will still be able to install the official UK firmware once it's released?

You'd always be able to flash to it in Odin anyways (I don't use Kies for anything, life is happier that way).

I've used Kies to do the 3BR fix (which later came out as an Odin fix) and also Odin for a battery mod and JPK, and despite being nervous about it (as I was for Kies), I found Odin to be simple enough, and a lot quicker than Kies.

I guess it's like most things in life, once you've done it once you're somewhat more comfortable, and confident to give it another go.

There's a screen shot provided on page 3 of the XDA thread.

I will admit to printing out the instructions so I could tick the steps off as I went. I made a mistake too (putting the update.zip file in the *external* SD card when it should have been the *internal*) and I did have a moment of believing I had bricked my phone (this isn't putting you at ease is it!) but someone on the Android forum immediately replied and gave advice that meant I was able to pick up where I'd left off and complete the steps successfully.

Still, I completely understand the apprehension about tinkering with a phone that's close to $1,000. I just couldn't help myself ;-) I would not describe myself as a risk-taker either.

Yeah my biggest risk was Voodoo lagfix and root haha I think I'm a bit too nervous to flash firmware through Odin. I also am worried about using 2.2 without the Voodoo lagfix, I really hate the lag and don't want to use OCLF as it has slowdowns after a period and EXT2 is a dodgy fs

If you think just Odin is risky, it seems quite a few people successfully flash their firmware using Odin via Windows XP, installed in a virtual machine (using Virtualbox) on an Ubuntu linux host. It works fine too. I guess it's not as crazy as using WINE, although I've read of people trying that too.

I haven't tried it yet myself but it's how I will have to go as I can't get my old XP laptop to work and I'll want to update to Froyo soon.

I've done several flashes with Odin, first one even went wrong (my fault, shouldn't do your first flash after a night shift) and I pulled the battery out mid-process as it had stalled. The GS is actually quite resilient to bricking :) Obviously the potential is there, so granted its not for everyone.

EDIT: Another reason to update - Skype works on this firmware :)

My Kies is pretty useless on my desktop, its incredibly slow to launch and keeps saying no firmware upgrades available for my version ZSJG4, which I flashed to using Odin.

EDIT - Sorry just realised that the discussion was about whether Odin works with Win 7 64. I thought discussion was about Kies. Apologies.

[I have the latest version of Kies running on Win 7 64-bit and it runs OK - to the extent that Kies can run OK. I connects to my phone OK and tells me that I have the latest firmware version installed - which is correct because phone is not rooted etc.

TBH I'm sort of techy but I do not understand phones/Android/etc well enough to be comfortable flashing with Odin and all that stuff. Scared my phone will end up will 'rooted' in the bad way. So I'm just quietly waiting for 2.2/Froyo to come via Kies or whatever.]

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Just looking at the webpage now, it's also available on 2.1. And it's getting some mixed reviews right now. I don't even bother using Skype on my computer anymore. I need to be convinced why Skype is a good app - computer or Android.
