Imagine if Sky had a product that didn't rely on their hardware that people could run side by side Spark Sport that didn't cost 5x as much!

If you want both Basics, and HD ( soon to be free), a great recorder, and sport, yes it is currently 5x as much. You get a wide variety of channels. You can get Sky and Sport for about $55. Soon when they bring their puck, I guess you buy it, and pay $55 and use your BB. You can also just get sport via Fanpass and pay $60 I think for 6 months, or $30 with Spark.

Or another option is don't get Sky

Dingbatt: I'll have to check, but I think my hd ticket was part of multi room so I might not get the benefit of the hd reduction after all. However, I don't really need two boxes anymore so may be able to ditch multi room and save myself $25/month.

Now where is that most recent Sky bill?

When the puck comes out, and the full app, you can ditch Sky devices and have multi multi room, i.e, on your tablet anywhere

I understand prices rise, etc - however it seems to me almost every time Sky puts out a press release saying "we've lost subscribers", almost immediately they put out another one saying "we're putting prices up". While I understand the two things go (somewhat) hand-in-hand, personally to me it's not a great look. They could have waited a while before raising the prices, maybe a month or something, give the "subscribers are leaving us" story time to disappear.

Fair points. Every company puts prices up, as they do the salaries of their staff, its inflation, which happily os pretty low here. This increase, quoted as annual be some here is the first in 3 years. 1.9%. Plus with HD becoming free, its now net cheaper for many.

Its not a great look timing wise but its business.

Yes, thanks. Its a valid option to reduce costs. The 99 isn't worth it, thats marketing to push 6 months worth. If you can live without recording, its a sound option.

Given what’s left there they could price match spark sport, and train and regain those that left because of the forced basic plus sport pricing.

I was thinking getting rid of my multi room as well, problem is the room I’d want to remove is the one that powers the dish, relatively speaking multi room is now adding a $25 additional cost, where before compared with having HD ticket was adding $15.

I think the splitter in roof only allows power through one way, other option would be to buy a cheap Freeview receiver I guess and see if it powers dish ok.

I’ll wait for now to see what additional channels get HD, hoping Sky 5 is one of them.

Some time soonish, there will be a full app, no device attached. Your TV, tablet, Chromecast, that will be the ultimate multi room.No, I dont work for Sky or own any shares (phew) everyone wanted competition, and while for some the fragmentation will matter, its also caused Sky to add more value, thats a good thing

Yep. Any business thats facing competition wont just do stuff now, they will wait till they have to. Sport is odd, as we want both, now we have to buy two services not one. Sky isnt really competing in the direct sense, as making Sky Sport cheaper wont encourage me to forget F1 on Spark and watch Croquet on Sky.... I want both. Sky can make it cheaper. They have dropped HD fee. Maybe they drop MySky fee when I buy a puck. Maybe I forego convenience and use Fanpass, which doesn't record (The OD was pretty poor when I had it briefly a while back, so no replays) and popups aren't there. Sky will want to make me have both, another reason why I will wait and see.

Wait and see is the key, see where it all settles.

I'm assuming it will limit the number of devices used simultaneously dependant on which subscription you get, the same as Netflix.
And as far as I know, our MySky was a lump sum, not an ongoing rental, so already have a device. So no point in ditching the recording capability, or the ability to use it at the bach where there is no internet.

God, I love how every single Sky thread devolves into a Sky Bashing thread.

It is at dig at $100 p/m for the same content (actually less) on a digital platform that they offer on satellite. Without speaking for tdgeek, it might be feasible for them to run Spark Sport next to Sky Sport if Fan Pass pricing was in line with satellite. Whatever defensive business reason you may want to give, it will never make the ridiculous price difference between the two look palatable at a consumer level.

Nah I was referring to having the ability to run Spark Sport and Fan Pass on (eventually) an Apple TV as an example. But at $20 for SS and $100 for FP (I don't count specials as the raw numbers are what the company thinks it is worth), FP makes that difficult. I was saying imagine if FP was like $30-$50 p/m, then maybe the two could co-exist.

Seriously, all I want is content on apps, I don't want a "puck", another set-top box and a dish installed. I have the infrastructure already... I have money to give you!

I have people in the house that are not able to use Netflix, even with a smart TV and Netflix button on remote, so need one Sky Box for them to record and a bit more choice.

The second TV is just me only, which I use Sky for recording. I can live without second box.
I haven’t got round to it but was going to plug hard drive into TV and see how well it does recording, ( be especially good for recording Duke HD), the reminder function on TV works well and unlike Sky it even auto changes channel, good for when having tea and no one near remote.

The puk maybe an option on second TV but for pricing will they recognise that I already have a Sky sub, or will it be like Neon at full rates, which means stuff is only available one TV, or movies for example have to be paid twice, one for box and one for puk if wish to choose what TV.

I’m the same as Dingbatt, don’t have to pay for record which makes decision harder, and one box is a Mysky Plus.

What? Pay $20/month for the minor sports, and then paying upwards of $50/month for rugby, NRL and Cricket. No bloody way.

Fan Pass is lacking two features that would make me switch from Kayo: a) Pop up channels (55-58) and ESPN/ESPN 2, b) The ability to watch a replay when I want, either while the game is still on, or some time later. The best you can do with Fan Pass is a 25 minute highlight package (that usually takes a day to put up), or hope Sky Sports 1-4 are showing a replay when you want to watch it.

Back on topic :) I'd think the price increases for all customers would be a gain in revenue roughly in line with the loss of revenue from the HD ticket, so would be revenue neutral in the grand scheme of things.
