networkn: It's been a while since this thread was updated, any word on 100-120w equivalent LED E27's? I bought a couple at the Home Show and was impressed with them, but wondering on others experience with them?

How many lumens where they?

Looking at fitting out my house with these

7 Watt version.

Claimed 1050 but I think that was optimistic. They are about as bright as my 100w bulbs

150 lm/W is a ridiculous claim. 600 lumen is much more likely.

Also those orbit ones probably wouldn't be suitable for your home - only 420 lumen for the 7W version - about equivalent to a 40W incandecent bulb.

2700K would be more yellow than warm white too.

Are Bunnings and Mitre10 still selling name brand LED edison E27 replacement bulbs? I couldn't find any listed on their website.

I'm interested in replacing some of my incandescent bulbs with some LEDs to see how well they perform. I'd prefer to not use CFLs.

Had viribrights there when I last went in. I have LED everywhere that can take them so have not looked at the price in quite some time, but they were no more than the same wattage off brand ebay junk was and has local support when they have premeture deaths.

The GU10s have been nothing but trouble for a friend who is cursed with those things, the GU5.3 12V ones have been great for me, but are not dimmerable.

Bunnings has Viribright for a long time now, just keep your receipts as they sometime fail early but have a good price and for me the payback period is 5 months. Don;t buy the 11W bulb, it is dimmer than the 8W and cost more and looks ugly (old model).

Bunnings also sells Philips, if you are willing to pay $60+.

Bunnings now has a couple of LED down light fittings, Philips and Orbit. I have a few Philips 18W fittings which works well outside where I do not want dimming and don;t mind a few seconds start-up delay.

Has anyone looked at the payback of led vs cfls? Looking to fit out my whole house but it all comes down to money.

I have not compared with CFL as I do not want CFL, but I have compared with incandescent. At 5h per day a $17 8W Viribright LED has a payback period of about 5 months compared to a $1 100W incandescent. The effective/usable light output when used in a downlight fitting is about the same.

If you want to compare with a pendant/table incandescent light then the light output is about the same as a 75W incandescent or a 55W halogen (which is what we have in our pendants) so then you are looking at a payback of about 6-7 months.

Given the price of a good CFL is about 1/3 of a Viribright, the payback is around 3 times as long. However, having had both I do certainly prefer an LED over CFL.

Payback is immaterial to me. Cfls are to slow to light ip and dimmerable ones suck and cost more than the led one.

Incandescent ones are all depressing orange and get worse when dimmed.

Picked up some Viribright 8w cool white and warm white from Bunnings today. Have to say, I'm just not very impressed with the quality of the light. It still seems pretty dim. The cool white is too harsh for indoor lighting and has the feel of being in a workshop and the warm white has a rather greenish hue to the light.

Is this as good as LED replacement bulbs get? I'm a bit of a stickler for quality light and these don't seem to be producing a quality of light that is anywhere close to a standard incandescent or eco-halogen bulb type?

There are single LED bulbs that you can adjust the warm white/cool white to suit personal taste. And most mainstream LED will go up to the equiv of about 60W-65W, some will go higher but not many. unless you go to a downlight replacement where there is more room for LED chips and more cooling.

Just saw this yesterday comparing prices, im tempted to get a couple of these Philips myVision lamps, can get them for $17+GST

Any one seen these working? my wholesalers have none in stock at the moment. so waiting to see if someone else grabs a couple to see how they look.

Not sure they will be bright enough for me, I currently have 24w CFLs all through house. so I would think these will be a tad dull for my likes.

That's an excellent chart. I think they would be far too dull, our Philips 24W CFLs are marker 1550 lumen

The first ones I've bought looked good, about 6 months later when I've bought the last one for our home they had a different colour. For the price, it is the best you get retail in NZ.

The future is in LED light fittings where cooling can be properly designed. I think you might like the colour of Philips SmartBright 18W downlight fittings (model DN052B), but they are not dimmable and there is a 1-2 seconds power-up delay (about 10-20 seconds the first time you use it, they charge a capacitor slowly and do not turn on until it is fully charged). Cost is around $70.

I am keen on trying the new Orbit fittings at Bunnings, as it is the only ones I can find so far that will fit the 120mm holes already in my ceiling (SmartBright need 125mm). Until I'm happy with a replacement fitting, I'm continuing with Virtibright as the only affordable option.

In our house we still have left seventeen old style 100w incandescent downlights that take up to a 100w R80 ES flood lamp. Over the years I have replaced a lot of this type of downlight with TH ones using a high output 35w 24 degree 12v IRC lamp. This was before LED was becoming main stream. However in service areas like toilets,laundrys,hallways etc I do not want to replace the R80 downlights at present.As a compromise I have bought some spun metal reflectors that cliped into the existing recessed fitting and installed (screwed in) some LED lamps. The lamps are Osram LED Parathom PRO Classic A 80 12w = 60w warm white with a life of 25000 hours.They are 810 lumins, 2700k , and std E27 (ES) screw base.They are about the same dimention as an ordinary 150watt inscandescent lamp and the control gear is built into the base. The light output is more than adequite for the above mentioned uses.They turn on imediately and don't flicker. However the only very slight downside is that the colour has a very slight pinkish tinge.You only notice the colour when they are mixed with the std incandescent lamps as I'm replacing with LED as the old R80 lamps blow. I got these lamps from Ideal Electrical,Sydenham Br,Christchurch. Hopefully installing these will eradicate the constant chore of having to replace the old incandescent type.
