You'd be surpriced at the number of larg(er) retailers who use antequated systems. There are even adapters to convert existing dialup terminals to IP which are also very slow. These were quite common for a while.

Every non NFC terminal used for credit cards has to be replaced by mid 2014 anyway, so there will be a lot of upgrades occuring for retailers who didn't upgrade to NFC terminals last year when terminals under EMV 4.2 were culled.

I think I need to get into the EftPOS business :) This is like the 3rd mandatory upgrade in 5 years :)

It's only a mandatory upgrade for those who upgraded terminals last year and opted for non NFC terminals. If you upgraded to a EMV 6.0 compliant NFC capable terminal last year you'll be sweet for a number of years to come.

And some of the BP's have got paywave which makes it even easier!

I used paywave for the first time at a pharmacist the other day. It felt really odd just waving the card around and not touching anything (putting my pin number in etc).
I didn't know I had paid until the lady gave me the receipt.

Kids these days and their new fangled gadgets...

Aussie recently announced 100000 NFC terminals and 10000000 Paywave/Paypass cards in the marketplace. They really are leading the world in terms of deployments.

Blatant plug: so do we, and have had it since ASB first introduced them (who provide our merchant facility)

The biggest issue we find is customer education. A lot of people have them, but have no idea what they do, or how they use them.

The banks really have failed in this area.

I'd have to agree; I'm a geek and I don't know what it is/what it's for/whether my card supports it... I'd never even heard of it until this thread!

Paywave/Paypass are CC transactions. The technology can't (yey) be used with cheque/savings accounts.

After we've told customers, we've had them especially buy another cheap item just to show their friends how it works. In some ways paypass/paywave is good for business!

Well judging by Steve's post it appears that it won't work with my debit card anyway, which could partially explain lack of information :)

Are you sure about ANZ? Last time I asked them (around a month ago) they still couldnn't tell me when Paywave would be offered. They've had Paypass for nearly 2 years now (and completely screwed up the launch) but have never offered Paywave.

It seems ANZ started deploying Paypass from the 29th October. I'll have to upgrade my Visa now, I moved from Mastercard to Visa earlier in the year so lost my Paypass!
