freitasm: If anyone ever calls me and says "I am from [bank|other company]" I ask for a name and call the number *I KNOW* to confirm. I don't use any number they give me as it could easily be themselves just answering and saying "yes, it's from the bank".

Everyone needs to be very careful with identity theft these days.

Fair point however I don't recall ever giving this person my full name, my pin, my address, my date of birth, my mothers maiden name. You will also see from my OP that this person successfully changed my pin three times prior to me receiving this suspect phone call.

The lady I spoke to at Vodafone support also said this was a legitimate call other wise I would have insisted on the spot that my security details were changed.

I'm actually sure that the call was legit because judging by the IQ of the people who are now texting my phone (thinking they are texting said thief), which seems to be barely double figures I doubt they would be smart enough to pull that off. I think it was someone from a Vodafone store.

xpd: Seems stupid... steal phone.. use and abuse the existing credit... when its blocked, go steal another phone or buy a new SIM @$30 which it appears theyre doing anyway...why goto the hassle of trying to get the same number again ? Unless theyve got a personal gripe with you.....

I'd love to know the answer to that myself? Makes no sense at all.

If what you're saying 100% accurate, then its sounds like either a dodge inside job, or a case of identity theft, my money on the latter.
If it is someone after you personally, they dont have to get all the info in one go. A piece of mail here, a conversation there pretty quickly adds up.

Do you have a number that's "special" in any way - repetitions, spells something, etc?

I can't see anything desirable at all about my number. Although that doesn't mean it isn't to this particular person.

So last night I ring Vodafone to lodge a complaint and my pin that I set at the shop earlier that day is not working. I ring the shop this morning and apparently the pin was changed again at 8pm last night. However it was before then that I attempted to ring Vodafone to lodge the complaint so not sure what is going on there.

Virtually straight after I get my pin returned to what it was (or should have been) I ring Vodafone again to lodge a complaint. This was about 9:30AM this morning but apparently the complaints person was not available so I left my work number and am still yet to receive a response 3 and a half hours later.

I can't even ring support back as I have no credit left on my phone and there is no way I am topping it up until I am confident this has all been sorted.

Its someone you know whos doing this & theyre doing it out of spite.

Reading through all of this its ur own stupidity that has gotten you in this situation LOL

Dont blame Vodafone for you getting your phone stolen & having someone know your information to change your details (if it ever happened)

GOOD LUCK haha

None of us know the full story here most of the time where pple will go to this extreme is when they know the victim.
So either the victim has done something to piss off the so called thief in this case its well deserved OR its just jealousy.

Why would you go out of your way to cause all this havoc unless you know the victim???

Not even worth responding to that comment. The phone call turned out to be legit not a phishing scam after all.

So this story is not closed yet? I don't see any update here with an ending. It will be "I set the PIN in the morning, the other guy resets in the evening" for some time?

You don't have anything else from Vodafone?

It seems to be solved apart from a couple of unusual goings on with my online account and the 8pm pin change Tuesday night remains a bit of a mystery after the lady at the Vodafone store made a note on my account to explicitly not make changes to my account without providing the last four digits of my passport and expiry date.

At least my sim is still active and my number is working and pin remains intact since it was reset yesterday morning.

Vodafone did contact me today, apologized and offered me some compensation. They also stated they had put in place further security to ensure this didn't happen again. However if there was any way this could have been prevented it should have been in place right at the beginning and it would have saved a lot of hassle.

Not to put it on you, but more security on you phone itself? I have numerous locks on my cell, and it defaults to lock after 1min of inactivity, or put on charge, and requires 2 different codes if turned off.
