richms: A friend had someone try this on a while back, apparently the number they got on a prepay pack used to be someone elses a long time ago, and they wanted it back. Thankfully they seemed to have an IQ well below average so they had no success. Their texting abuse about wanting their number back didnt help them out either.

I can tell you right now the person in this case is also challenged in the IQ department. It doesn't take much to figure that out. Which is one of the concerning things, because if they were able to pull it off anyone can. Unless of course they knew someone at Vodafone.

In my opinion there were so many ways this could have been avoided and I think it was a complete failure in Vodafones current system. First of all a pin is a pin and no one should be able to access your account without it. Period. Secondly if unusual occurrences are going on with an account it should be immediately flagged for investigation.

Although I can say at least the people I dealt with at First Mobile were extremely helpful and helped me keep my sanity. Without their help I would more than likely be still playing cat and mouse with this person.

The support staff at Vodafone and even on this thread became extremely defensive telling me what I was saying had happened was not possible and so on which was probably the most infuriating thing.

I'd be surprised if Vodafone didn't make a public statement on this thread along the lines of "this is an isolated case and steps have been made to ensure this doesn't happen again" but they will never reveal exactly how it happened.

By the way I have been trying to respond to their last email for the last two days via their support ticketing system but it's broken also.

What's the point in having a pin if it's not needed?

Because using a PIN is much easier than going through all the other security questions. Now it's your turn to answer my question, which was a serious one. What happens if you forget your PIN? Under your scenario, you're permanently locked out of your account. Is that really what you want? Do you think they should do the same thing at the bank?

Still, they could enable that choice for accounts. For example, you could say you want your PIN to be the only security on your account and if you forget it, you're willing to lose all access to the account. That would seem fair enough. I'll stick to the current system though, I think.

I think you took my statement too literally, or perhaps I should rephrase. If you do not remember your pin or lose it or whatever then you should have to produce ID or at least be asked some reasonable questions. Vodafone themselves even admitted to me that some of their questions were pointless.

You can't really compare this to a bank as someone claiming your bank account is a lot more serious than claiming your prepay account. I know Vodafone are prepared to take the risk of this happening on the odd occasion as the number of people who forget their pin would be far greater and cause far more issues for them if they tightened security. Too bad if you do happen to be one of the unfortunate ones.

It's all very well for you to sit there and say "I'll stick with the current system" you wouldn't be saying that if you had gone through what I had.

And to answer your question I'd be more than happy to be locked out if I forgot my pin because I never have.

Fair enough. I guess I did take "First of all a pin is a pin and no one should be able to access your account without it. Period." too literally.
