Windows 11 (work PC).

"Extract all..." to decompress an archive which contains exactly one text file. Somehow Windows is now interpreting the single text file as separate files per line, so it's choking on "copying 55,328,519 items".

Absolutely crazy how far this OS has regressed.

Update: 7-zip completed this process in 15 seconds, resulting in one correct file. I cancelled the Windows extraction process after an hour, during which it had created 2,179,781 files. Insanity.

It gets better! In this case there are two streets with the same name in Auckland, and the Maps app on my phone was going to the wrong one when I typed in the address. I went to the correct one manually, selected it, and created a contact from it.

Going to Contacts and clicking the address takes me to Maps for the wrong street.

Edit: Someone in the office just tried it on her older phone, and it worked correctly. It seems that Apple has managed to break it between iOS 16 and 18.

I just made a comment on another forum, which uses a threaded view (i.e. you reply to a specific comment, rather than directly to a thread). I realised that I'd put the comment against the wrong post, so I deleted it. I then tried to repost it on the correct comment, and got an error: "You have already posted this comment."

It seems they put in a check to make sure that you didn't accidentally double-post the same thing, but they didn't take deletions into account.

I added an extra comma and it submitted successfully.

I wasn't the person who booked it, but I was forwarded a copy of the confirmation email. Using nothing but a link in that email (no authentication) I can see the name of the person who booked it, her email address, the "PIN code" for the booking, the last 4 digits of the credit card number, the amount paid, and the date of the payment.

On the Spectator website, at the top of each article, there is a button that takes you to the comments beneath without having to scroll.

In a relatively recent redesign, the comments at the bottom have an on/off toggle.

Bizarrely, if you click on the button to go to the comments, you’ll still have to click the on/off button when you jump down.

It’s a reasonable assumption that you want to read the comments if you click the link that takes you straight there, so why do you still need to click on/off?

Regular readers there are still scratching their heads trying to work out what value the on/off button actually has at all.

It turns out that I was also able to modify the booking. Again, this is without any authentication. All I had was the booking confirmation email.

We have an internal Web server called ads02. If you go to Firefox and type ads02 then press Enter quickly, you get ads02. If you take too long to type it then you get a Google search results page for "ads02008mr r" (because when you type something it goes off and uses Google to try to autocomplete your word, and apparently that's the most popular search that begins with "ads02").

And that's why I always type a "/" after IP addresses and other one word internal websites. A lot less likely to end up doing a search.

Or yo could disable the search from the address bar?

Thanks! The setting I wanted was actually "Show search suggestions ahead of browsing history in address bar results", which is enabled by default. Turning it off has moved ads02 to the top of the list and therefore made it "stick" as a default.

I use Opera browser a couple of times per week in addition to Chrome. Why does it need to do a little audio announcement each time it's been upgraded? I don't really care about a browser update. I don't want a tab to open and musical notification telling me about it.

Same with Windows Ten lock screen suddenly displaying weather and other news. I didn't request this, don't put it on there.

I counted TWENTY ONE PROCESSES from 2 separate companies in order to run ONE GAME?!

EA are truly plumbing the depths of their depravity and greed.

I knew they were bad back in the day, but forcing you to use both their incredibly invasive malware AND Steam at once is just.. Wow.

So utterly eff them so hard, I'm downloading all Sims torrents I can.

Such pathetic anti consumer greed is utterly unfathomable.

Not to mention that EA will randomly shut your account and claim it's been hacked and fail to allow you to log back in.

I thought I'd give the EA version of WRC a go but got blocked from any career or online modes because of my EA account being "lost". Disappointed that Codemasters got acquired by EA as that's basically a death sentence for CodeMasters. But good that EA has been dropped from the next iteration of WRC games.

Just came across a webform from a NZ organisaiton with a mobile field that only accepts numbers in the format 3 3 4 (i.e. xxx xxx xxxx). They don't seem to realise One NZ has 9 and 11 digit numbers as well as 10. SMH. Sometimes it's best not to validate too strictly.
