Glad to see things have improved for you. If everyone took this action instead of incessantly whinging about it then maybe Telecom would get the message that Go Large in its current form doesn't work.

This is definately great news to hear NZSnoopy

I've changed from Go Large to Go Express last night and WOW...... my speed increased so much.

I am definately going to change to Orcon's cheaper plans.... and probably better off to stay away from their ZeroShock plans.

Since being switched over to go-large my performance has been appalling and I am less than 2K from my exchange.
I am going to have to spend 79 bucks a month which is almost 33% more than I was spending to get back to something close to what I had. My broadband most certainly has NOT been unleashed, but instead, I have just been screwed by Telescum.

I have just done some speed test and here is what I find:

Auckland   3861 down 92 up
Montreal      534         52
Melbourbe  1322         129
LA               790         128

So yeah, if I was a trademe addict I would be fine but I am not.

I am assuming these download speeds are based on http traffic but I download drivers, tarballs etc and most of this is FTP traffic. I am sure my old 56K dial-up modem would do better.

What are my choices. (rhetorical)
All the other providers want to link tolls and phone call into their deals. I DONT MAKE TOLL CALLS - NEVER.
I call cell-cell off peak. Clear want me to make $10 of call a month and if I dont they will charge me $10 anyway....XNET looks to be the best deal but again there is  a toll call requirement, same with Orcon. Ihug and on it goes...

All I want is abt 10Gb a month full speed and 256K or better uploading for about $50 a month which is what I had. No one can offer it. Why ? because the other providers are all being screwed by Telescum and its monopolistic position too.

Last week I sorted out my neighbour, a panelbeater with a new computer and he got ADSL via his account manager. He told his account manager his main purpose would be to email photos of smashed cars to insurance assesors so what plan did they put him on - yes, Go Large. Another telecom employee with s*** for brains. 128K theoretical upload speed which in reality is about 75kbps, not much better than his old dial up modem. My neighbour cannot understand why a 6Mb email is taking for ever to be sent...

I have been a loyal Telcom suported since their day one, signing many people up. Always believed it was better to talk with the horses head not the horses bum if there was a problem but not any more. I've had a gutsful of these jerks, their rubbish services nd the bulls they use to suck us in and screw us off...

While we welcome views and opinions about Telcos... This kind of trolling is not accepted. Telecom can be referred to as Telecom NZ, Telecom, TCNZ but not Telescum. There is a site that may be more suitable if you wish to keep calling them by the name of 'Telescum'.

128K theoretical upload speed which in reality is about 75kbps, not much better than his old dial up modem.

Considering that 56K modems had a maximum upload of 33.6kbps, 75kbps is more than double that speed.

Now back on topic:
I've heard that WXC (XNET) does not have a toll penalty on their tolls package. Perhaps someone in the forum can confirm this without pushing the thread too far offtopic.
Orcon do have a $10 penalty if you don't shift your tolls to them, however while I was a customer - they did not have a minimum spend.
Additionally Orcon offer 15gb with full speed down and full speed up for $59.95. Its not too far off the asking price... You can play with the plans and speeds here.
Ihug apparently has a similar policy in regard to tolls too

nnnyeah but the 128kbit upload thing really is an interesting point.

-There are lots of people for various reasons who send files for legitimate reasons. Why is it so costly for the telco for me to email (or send via ftp/msn/etc) a 20mb file to another person in New zealand?

XNET can offer you a 10GB plan with FULL-SPEED upload (and download) for $60.17 per month.  It's called FLOOD and you will find full details here:

http://www.xnet.co.nz/hsi/

As Cokemaster has mentioned, XNET do not have any tolls requirement with their plans.  Contact details for WorldxChange / XNET are here:

http://www.wxc.co.nz/about/

They will be glad to confirm about the "No Tolls Requirement" policy.

I have just signed up with XNET.
Heads for XNET, tails for Orcon, Heads won even at $2 a month more and sacrificing 2 free months.

I called the respective helpdesks today. Xnet responded in 7 minutes but couldnt help, Orcon hadnt responded after 12 minutes so I hung up.

Going offtopic:
I might have to look at a Fullspeed upstream plan myself... I've got over 2.7GB (thousands of pictures) of photos that I need to upload for a project - and I've found 128kbps is just too slow for that.
Go Large has largely been ok for similar projects but all of them have been between 500-1GB in the past.

Well, I now have proof that Telecom are not delivering us "as fast as our line can go" on the GO LARGE plan. I was moved to GO EXPRESS just for the weekend to see if it was the plan or the line that was causing my slow speeds.   As soon as I was switched I did a speed tests and got 6.7mb/sec and this was consistent.   Previously on go large my max was about 1.2mb/sec.   So I now know my line can go faster and they are not delivering as fast as my line can go.

I exceeded my pidly 2gb limit on GO Express this weekend within a few hours but it was a good test and my fastest line speed was 6.9mb/sec. I took screen dumps of all my speed tests as proof. Now back to dialup speeds so have requested they switch me back to go large for now as at least its slightly faster than dialup. The nice person on the helpdesk said they had just received an email on problems with the go large plan with no estimated timeframe for fixing it - I'm not really sure how much to believe them as I've hads the problems for 2 months but go large should also be able to do over 6mb/sec as my line allows this speed otherwise they have deceived the public and action should be taken. If they were going to restrict the bandwidth so much on this plan they should have not said the go large plan is as fast as your line allows and advertised it as limited speed.

Good stuff dbenfell. My spped went from 3.8 to about 6.6 after I switched providers and the performance has been consistent all week for anything I have done which includes remote desktop and ftp.

Switching to Xnet was the best thing I have done and there is no toll requirement nor "early" disconnection penalty.

Yeah I want to leave but worried they'll charge me the $99 for early disconnection but I think I've got a strong case for arguing against that given the very poor performance I've had and their reluctance to fix it.
