Hey guys,

Interesting read so far! Thanks for all your suggestions. So when we called chorus today, they said that it's up to the ISPs to pay for more cards to be added or something like that. How awesome.
We live in a townhouse kinda deal so we have a lot of available wifi connections with good signal, will be talking to the neighbours and seeing what we can do there. We couldn't move our port over to the other house or anything like that with slingshot, tried asking them. I mean really who expects there to be no port availability in such an area! Not to mention even if the previous people had internet, when they moved out the port would have been given to another waiter.

What a terrible situation this is to be honest.
These houses were here even longer than 8 years ago. Fibre upgrades are a long way away and it is a huge hassle when we both use the internet daily for uni and work. It's not just to even check facebook or something, it really affects our life. You don't realise just how dependent your day to day life is on the internet until you don't have it.

I agree with your annoyance - it must be really galling.

You need to do more than that - put it on the contract. I asked whether if the hotel (serviced apartment) wifi was compulsory, the reply was yeah there was nothing of that sort. I asked further whether I can get connected to my ISP of choice, and the answer was yes. Of course I knew nothing of line capacity and such, so if you can get that guarantee into the contract it can be of benefit in getting some money back from the vendor.

Reading this thread made me think of a couple of questions of my own...

(1) I thought ISAMs had more capacity than ASAMs, or is it the other way around?

(2) Tim (who is that in your profile pic, btw?) mentioned the cabinet name. Is there a spreadsheet or anything on Chorus's site that says what exchange the cabinet is connected to, or where it is? ie, mine is BKL/D (I think) and I know it's in Birkdale and VDSL-enabled. Is there a list that says what cabinet is where?

Yes, ISAMs have a lot more capacity than ASAMs but they still have their constraints.

I've seen success in the form of communities banding together to have petitions signed to support the need for more service in areas around the country. A good example was Pt Chev years ago, and more recently I've seem an area up north have necessary maintenance which has been needed for years, which never hit the media. All only as a result of individuals in the community really fighting Chorus for it.

It depends on how much energy you're willing to invest in showing your desire for a fixed line internet connection. As others have said, the position you're in is one I do not envy at all. But if I were you, my plan of action would be to engage my immediate community and assess their needs, then I'd engage several ISPs to see if anyone is willing to support our needs, and then in turn demonstrate that need to Chorus with the ISPs backing. Involve the media even if you have the willpower to deal with them, they could help your cause if played right.

Anything fibre fed is going to have VDSL to an extent.

Please elaborate on this? Can you not get fast ADSL or something? Last time i checked most countries of the size to population of NZ are lucky to get ADSL2+ or VDSL2 in central locations.

I don't think availability of internet would be anything more than a minor influence in my decision to buy a house. A house is a major long term investment and temporary internet problems are a minor consideration in that context.

We have just bought a near new house. The owners had an ADSL modem installed so they have a connection. But for all I know I could face the same problems as the OP as far as port availability. We don't need internet at home - it's used almost exclusively for entertainment.

It sounds like the OP really needs internet for work/study. If that was me I would just pay for the wireless, and limit use to the essentials.

Mobile data over 4G (I'm on telecom mobile) is impressively fast everywhere I've tried it.

There are densely populated suburbs within New Zealands main cities that might as well be considered "rural", this is what I mean by 3rd world amenities amongst 1st world living.

This is pretty off-topic, but could you name me an example? As someone who grew up in a 3rd world country I haven't come across any place in New Zealand that remotely matches the description '3rd world'.

You can get very poor broadband speed living in the CBD fringe of a city. That would be an exact description of the quality of 'broad'band we get at our current abode, which is within 10 minutes walk of Nelson's CBD. Everywhere I travel overseas, including some 3rd world countries, I get better internet speed than I do at home. Hardly the foundation on which to build any sort of knowledge economy.

anyone able to comment on the accuracy if the GZ GIS data?

According to this I have fibre right up my road "Fibre:PAK" from GLB/AD.... though the install date is 0000-00-00... this mean they are planning to upgrade but don't know when, or did the upgrade and never made it 'live' ??

I'm still hanging off the main exchange 4.73 Km's away (!) and my neighbours are port waiting for the last 2 years!
