Interesting. You must be very young I guess, if your visual acuity is such that you can see a difference in sharpness of text on identical pages on the iP4 and SGS side by side. I've run a few informal tests with colleagues and the consensus is that there's no difference. Anecdotal, I know, but I haven't seen any empirical evaluations on the web. If you know of any yourself, post a link. That said, none of those people were under 30 so maybe that's a factor.

However, on the other hand, our kids who range from 17 to 22 can't see any difference either, so maybe genetics is a factor as well.

One thing that all have agreed* is that the colour and contrast of the SGS display is very impressive. :D

My take from what I've seen so far on smartphone screens is that the pixel pitch at 480x800 on a 4" display is fine enough for me to be unaware of its existence, and I won't get any benefit from a higher resolution on that size except maybe bragging rights. The downside will be greater power consumption via the extra pixels to be displayed and the GPU grunt required to push them.

So for me at least, there's no point in paying more for higher pixel density and I'll never make a buying decision based on a higher pixel density.

I know there are loads of people that have commented on the less than clear text on the pentile matrix screens though, googling that brings back tons of hits and even the xda forums are full of people commenting on it, some seem to not notice it, others at the other extreme say they cant stand it. I can notice it but not to the point where its to the detriment of the phone but definitely looking forward to a non pentile screen to see the difference there but anyway obviously just a personal thing. Everyone has their ideas of what they want etc and what they don't care about.

Yeah, there's very much a personal preference thing and if you do see a difference, then it's going to be of importance to you.

I'm typing this while looking at my 1900x1200 24" display, and I can easily see the diplay pixels and the antialiasing in the text. Makes no difference if I'm looking at a browser, InDesign or Word - the pixel grid and antialias artifacts are clearly visible, so I don't think my eyes are too poor. Yet I see no visible pixels on the SGS and no antialiasing artifacts.

I would assume that the hardware manufacturers will pump up the pixel density to the point where nobody older than 8 will see pixels unaided and cap it there since the bragging rights will cease to be a factor. By then there'll be some other wrinkle that they can push as proof they have the better tech, anyway. :D

Regarding the readability of text on the pentile SAMOLED on the SGS, the default sharpness settings leave much to be desired but Supercurio has pretty much resolved this in all kernels that use his tweaks, check out someone who is using the Speedmod kernel on their i9000.

Well, I have just dont the unthinkable.

I bought a Galaxy S i9000

After reading 3 or more news articals regarding the release date for the s II to be in may I just could not wait that long, and even then I wanted to wait for the price to drop and see what peoples review were.

So I will enjoy my galaxy s 1 which I doubt I will pugrade when the s II comes out : l

I bought it off eking.co.nz and should recieve it later this week. I just hope it isnt a faulty GPS or wifi one :(

After months of reading the enormous Galaxy S thread, and then this one I've finally bitten the bullet and put in a pre-order for a Galaxy S2. I very nearly bought the Galaxy S (i9000t), but as I'll be on XT the price difference wasn't all that great to step up to its bigger brother.

Only 43 days until the release date now - this is going to be a very long wait...

Well I just bought two Iphone4 and a Galaxy S for work, all on Telecom. It will be interesting to compare them side by side in terms of the screen and just plain usability. The Galaxy is replacing a Blackberry Storm so that's going to be a quantum improvement, the iPhones are replacing regular handsets.

Bad news is they are saying these are optional. Samsung have done this before, not included TV Out cables in their flagship handsets retail package, I hope they don't do it again - its pisspoor not providing that in a handset at this price point.

Good news is that there is a USB OTG adapter pictured, and the MHL dongle, that lets you connect to a regular HDMI cable, but also has a charger input on the side. 1080p to television with simulataneous charging is a go.

Yeah that's what greatly annoyed me about my Galaxy S, the advertised micro-USB to HDMI never eventuated. Guess my Galaxy is almost a year old(well 10 months on the 5th April) so it mgiht be time to get a Galaxy S II!!

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Mine is also about that old, stunning really, I usually change phones about 6 times a year, but nothing has really made me think about changing till now.

The micro-USB to HDMI cable was never actually advertised for the Galaxy S as such, it briefly appeared on a page in relation to a couple of the US varieties of the SGS family, but was quickly taken down. It was never announced or promised by Samsung. They should have at least included the 3.5mm jack TV Out cable though!

really hope i haven't made a mistake going through mobicity ..they seem totally in the dark as to which version they are getting, but still have the model number up as the i9100

From the sounds of things the only version to get the SAMOLED+ screen is the version with the exynos processor. Mobicity clearly states that the screen is the SAMOLED+, and further discussion at the source thread also indicated that most of the initial shipment would be the I9100 model.

We'll know either way in another 5 or so weeks though. I've ordered mine through Mobicity as well.

Regards the screen clarity of SGSI with its pentile matrix and larger, lower res screen Vs the iPhone 4 - the difference is definitely noticeable. Definitely things like Supercurios sharpness fix make text clearer, there is no denying the difference is there, but its not an intrusion in day-to-day use for most. A minority of people notice it all the time though, and for them its a turn off, other people never notice it. Trade-offs with the SGSI is the better blacks, contrast, and viewing angles - overall I take them as essentially equal with different strenghs (a friend with an iPhone 4 and I have compared extensively).

The clarity of the SGSII with SAMOLED+ should be much less noticeable, since it has a real stripe subpixel matrix, so that fine feathering of text that you see in the SGSI will be gone.
