I've had excessive battery drain (Android OS using a large % of battery) and have tried a few things, will let you know if I notice a difference over the next few days.
This is my first android phone (from an iPhone 4) - How exactly do I update the phone? I go to Settings > About phone > Software Update > Check for Updates but then it just says Samsung Account already added in account manager. What next? Do I have to do it via Kies? If so, how do I do it.

Did an update on Sunday. This is how it went for me:
Make sure you have Kies installed & internet access working. Plug in phone via USB cable Kies will install drivers and connect to phone. Kies will check for updates and if found prompt you to update, or cancel. Select update and it will all happen.
After update, Samsung apps did an update to camera software
I've had great battery life, wifi/3G on, a couple of phone calls, a bit of gaming (30min or so), similar amount of music playing time, updating fbook and twitter widgets with push email, and a little gchat too. From 8am until lunch i've used 16% battery.
In regards to heat otoh, after an hour or so gaming non stop the battery was pretty beaten and the back of the phone was what i'd call pretty warm. Not so hot I wanted to put it in the fridge, but hot enough that I decided that that was enough angry birds (or insert other annoyingly time consuming game here).
So my android OS process is using 32% of my battery and I just cant shake it. I have tried stopping some services and clearing the ram or rebooting the phone.
On another note... I rebooted the phone when my battery was at 46%, then when it turned back on it was 22%...

Not yet, but will try via Kies when I get home in a few hours. Hopefully it works!

You can update Kies from within the application.
Did you do a battery calibration when you first got your phone? And make sure your battery is at 100% charge before you flash. Seems to make a difference for some folk in getting the maximum duration from their battery.

couple more wee quibbled with the phone .... none major.
no options as far as i can see to configure the behavior of the back key when in gmail ...with my desire it gave me the option to have it exit back to mail box and then exit the app on the back key.... with the GSG2 it just keeps going back through the messages.
also the browser .... kinda floaty, and not loving the text reflow ... does not readjust on pinch to zoom ..and ..can't set the browser as far as i can see to not view sites in mobile view ?

Judging by threads on XDA-forums, this is a known & common problem. Lots of details about it and some things to try with regards to resolving it are here (Lokhor already linked to this in his post here)
I'm contemplating upgrading to the SGS2 from my NexusOne. Does anyone forsee any point of my waiting for a month or so for the NFC-supporting version of it to arrive, or is this not something that's likely to be of any use in NZ for the forseeable?

Be prepared for some pain with Kies.
I tried to do a firmware flash earlier today. On the first attempt it stopped at 40% due to read timeout during download. The second attempt downloaded correctly (starts next step at 69%), but when the phone went into download mode Windows had to install drivers, and Kies decided to give up. The third attempt made me download the firmware yet again, but stopped at about 52% (read timeout again).
I'm not sure quite how much bandwidth was used during all of this, but it was probably getting close to a GB. And I still hadn't flashed the phone.
I ended up downloading Kies and the firmware package (about 302MB) and had no problems flashing the firmware. The Odin software doesn't allow you to do a backup, but didn't wipe anything so it wasn't so bad. You can always backup from Kies first for safety.
So if you have trouble with Kies, don't be too afraid to do use the alternate method of flashing. It'll also prepare you should you ever decide to put on custom firmware or root your phone, as many methods will also use Odin.

Dial *#1234# on your phone and look at the firmware.
The current firmware has: PDA: I9100XWKE2 PHONE: I9100XXKDJ CSC: I9100XEUKD1
The previous firmware was almost identical, but with PDA version of I9100XWKE1. Older firmwares had PHONE versions of XXKDD and XXKDH.
You can always use the Odin method to flash new firmware, even if Kies doesn't see it. You can also downgrade firmware if you want, or if a new firmware is found to have a bug.
