yeah, it's a bit out of date, mostly because Gorkhan is releasing about 372 beta's of his kernel every singe day!!

Definitely 2.1 (2.1.1 is only for people experiencing issues with 2.1). . . .when you grab it, also download the Superuser zip file which is linked right underneath; there'a an issue of some sort whereby you may lose root once you've flashed the ROM. If this happens, just reboot into CWM again, and flash the Superuser package from there, and you'll be good to go.

+1 and then some for Dlev's ROM. I've been a fan of his roms when he was doing them for the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and now on 2.1 for the S2. It is sooooooo good! Smooth, very very fast. Didnt go 2.1.1 as not experiencing the issues noted by some.. in fact.. never have issues at all. Have the samsung apps add on also but still runs sweet.

Hi there, last night I flashed Dlev 2.1 and all went well.
This morning it wouldn't connect to Wifi so I rebooted and it was fine, but I've lost the modem. It says it's unknown and of course I can't use the phone, or GPS.
I've been looking for a download file of the XXK13 modem but haven't had any luck so far. Does anyone have a link to it? Or any compatible modem would do. Clearly the phone isn't much of a phone without the modem ;-) Cheers.

thanks for that. I had found it earlier but wasn't sure they would be compatible. In the end I re-flashed the rom with only a wipe of cache and that sorted it out. Then I took a nandroid backup - just to be safe. Thanks for your help :)

GeoffisPure: Hi, guys. It's taken me about 2 weeks but I finally read through this whole thread. I was very lucky to be given a telecom-branded S2 by a friend who signed up for a Telecom contract but thought that I'd appreciate the phone more than she would (and she's right, I LOVE it)

Currently I don't really have a desire to root or flash my phone, but I do have a couple of questions.

By reading this thread I have come to understand that it's the distributor of the phone (in my case, Telecom) who decides whether users will be able to update their operating system - is that right? Why is that? Are some distributors better than others at providing these updates? Is it possible telecom might just say "no updates, customers can make do with 2.3.3" ? And does the fact that I'm now using a 2degrees sim affect this?

I notice when I plug my phone into Kies there is a message that "this firmware version cannot be updated". Why is that? Also, on the phone when I use "settings -> phone info -> Software update - check for update" I am given the bizarre message "samsung account already added in account manager". Selecting "resume update" gives the message "no update available".

Is it possible to remove Telecom branding, such as removing the "Your Telecom" app and renaming the browser to something non-ridiculous?

Many people have mentioned that social hub is a battery drainer. I'm currently getting 1 day of heavy use, or 2 days light use, but if it'spossible to get more juice I'm more than happy not to use it. Is it possible to go back, or am I stuck with it now that I've started using it?

Some have mentioned that the latest versions of the OS have an improved version of swype - something I'm quite keen to check out. Is it possible to upgrade Swype? The official website doesn't seem to let you.

Thanks to those who can answer my questions and to those who have provided very valuable information in this thread. Now that I've got through all 130 pages, next step for me is to check out Brendon's FAQ.

The reason that the firmware cannot be updated is that it is dependant on Telecom releasing a new firmware. To remove the Telecom bloatware, you would need to root your phone, install something like Titanium Backup, and then you could remove the apps you don't need, or 'freeze' them. I'm not an expert on this - there are others here with experience doing this.

I purchased an unlocked and unbranded phone as it was cheaper than buying from a NZ store and you don't get any of the carriers guff which isn't really necessary.

Oh, and re: Swype, I think you will need to wait for the updated firmware for the updated version.

Removing the social hub (or 'freezing' it) would stop it from draining the battery. It's installed on my phone but I have never used it. Once again, others here might have some ideas.

Oh, one final thing - I was able to update my phone from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 with the Kies app on my PC. When I tried to do this over the air, it said there wasn't an update available. Getting the update via my PC was the only reason I installed Kies on my PC.

I got my SGSII from Telecom yesterday and flashed Leomar's Revolution rom on it, however I have a few questions.

What is the best modem to use on Telecom's network? I currently have XXKI3 modem and it won't go over 3MBps in Speedtest, while my Sensation sitting next to it gets over 5MBps on the same network.

Also what is the recommended kernel? is Speedmod any good these days?
