Hi,

Over the past few days i have been getting totally random intense Ping/Lag Spikes where my ping shoots too 800-2,000+ ms and can last from anywhere from 30 seconds to an hour, then it goes completely back to normal. I tested Pingtest.net when the lag was occuring and had 600 ping and 160% Jitter, then re-tested when the ping/lag was gone and was only 60ms ping and 2% Jitter.

I have contacted Telecom and they performed a line test etc and all came back clear to them, i have also tried a DIFFERENT modem incase it was faulty modem and i am still getting the random intense lag. Please not during the massive ping/lag hike my internet connection DOES NOT disconnect, and my actual net speeds stay the same as usual, i just get crippling lag but the internet connection still stays on.

Any help be much appreciated. My Connection is Wired Broadband Adsl2

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Yeah, it's a rural connection, the speeds are slow in general but its always been what i've had from the start, its only past few days this insane ping and lag has occured that i've never experienced before which causes every game/programe to completely lag out, and the confusing thing is the internet speeds are not affected and the internet does not disconnect it just severly lags out until the random ping passes and goes back to normal until it happens again.

i assume you have insured your not getting spikes from other usage on your connection?

in which case, ild say its a conklin cabinet.... what is the general area that your located in?

Would need someone to Confirm with your actual address, that this is the case though, unfortunately I cant do that for you due to the FUG here.

My suspicion is that it may be the cabinet too, as there has been problems with it before, but the guy at helpdesk i talked with said he did some "tests" and apparantly came back clear, or is something else needed to be done to confirm a fault at the cabinet?

Would need to dig deeper into it as theres too many variables there still..

hopefully PL (or another spark guy) pops by, he will be able to do a few tests and confirm things for you..

Depending on where you are in Halcombe, Chorus's map says you may be able to get VDSL. All dependent on location however.

although it was a little hit and miss.

Where VDSL is available, all things being right, you should be in adsl2 range too though..

Theres a bit of Rural UFB down there too.

Quick Update:

Ok so, after 4 days of doing tests the "specialist team" at spark got back to me and said they cant find any faults anywhere and on top of that i have tried Different Modems, New Filters and everything else i can think of and yet the 2,000+ ping spikes still occur (couldnt load any website last night for 2 hours straight the ping/lag was that bad).

Anyone have any clue what could be causing this? :/

Do a port reset and see what happens.
My bet is a back ground program congesting the line. 1500kb/s is not much to play with.

Maybe try Wireshark to see if anything is running on the pc ..?

Is it happening at the same time each night ?

Got a Port Reset done today (well i asked for one but the rep said its not actually a port reset, its something else) and all seemed good for awhile after the reset the Rep did, then out of the blue massive ping came back again totally crippling any net activity for a good Hour then dissapeared and completely went back to normal, was talking to Spark at the time and in tests they were asking me to do i was pulling 800+ ping and 160% Jitter, then when the lag passed it dropped to 40 ping and 2% Jitter, performed every check/test the Spark Customer service rep asked and still nothing has fixed it as off yet, even they are confused about what could be causing it..at a total loss

@graider~ no i havent tried wireshark, had never heard of it
