I have a new MacBook Pro, all of a sudden iTunes won't open whatsoever. It bounces around a little and nothing happens. I tried to reinstall iTunes and I get an error message: Installation failed, the installer encountered an error, that caused installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. ALSO I tried to instal Netflix and I got the same error message when I tried to install Silverlight that is used to stream Netflix. HELP I am going crazy!

Go into Applications, then Utilities and run Disk Utility and complete a repair disk permissions task and then restart the computer.

If it's new you can call Apple support as you get 90 days included.

I followed your instructions, but the option to repair disk permissions is not available, so i tried to verify disk and it says iTunes is ok. Still won't allow me to repair disk...

In Disk Utility there will be two options for your drive; one will have the model name (eg. "Toshiba 12345") and the other will be the volumen name (eg. "Macintosh HD"). Try selecting each one in turn and see whether the Repair Disk Permissions option becomes available.

If that doesn't work then reboot while holding Cmd-S at the boot chime, and it'll drop into text mode. Once you get a prompt (which from memory is "#" but might be "$"), type the following:

fsck -fy /

It'll go through some checks then return you to the prompt. You'll then be able to type either "reboot" or "restart" (I've forgotten which) to get back into the normal system, which with any luck will behave itself now.

How far over 90 days? might be worth just calling anyway, they can't charge you without your OK.

Ok I tired the text mode and did everything and iTunes still won't open. It said Macintosh seems to be ok. My iTunes used to work perfectly fine, till about a week ago.. and it just won't open. Nothing that I try to install will install...

Try running Software Update. It will be interesting if that is able to install stuff.

If it can, then some kind of user permissions problem has occurred. If that is true, then creating a new user might be a way out of it.

I have done an update, it always says unable to automatically install, and gives me a box to press to instal updates. I updated again this morning...

What if you create another admin user account and log into that?
Does iTunes work then?
