I don't understand why they don't make it simple and say, no driving if you have consumed any alcohol?

Glad I won't be in that range in two years time! Responsible drinkers should be allowed to drive to a restaurant have a couple of drinks and drive home again.
Once again the minority wrecks it for the majority.

The NZ limit is STUPIDLY high at the moment (0.08 g/dL). Much higher that most countries.

The Oz limit (0.05) is much more reasonable

I don't understand why they don't make it simple and say, no driving if you have consumed any alcohol?

I wonder at what point you would have zero breath alcohol after drinking a beer. If I had a beer at lunch, would I be ok to drive, say, three hours later with a 0 limit? 2 hours. 5 hours?

I fully approve of the zero limits for under 20 year olds.

It would be interesting to know how many fatalities or accidents are caused by drivers with alcohol levels between say, Australia's .05 and our .08.
And finally, would slightly lowering the level have any impact on people that are driving while smashed. I would suggest that if someone doesn't care now whether they are over the limit, they most likely wont care if the limit is slightly lower.

I know when I should and shouldn't drive after drinking and I don't drive at times when I am most definitely under the limit from my own personal choice. Can not more people do the same?

I've been at a point where I would consider myself in no way fit to drive, and then used a breath tester and come in well under the limit.

I'm sure there are thousands of people think they know when they are ok to drive after drinking, and I'm sure a majority of them will be wrong.

no alcohol would be simpler.

unless i am mistaken when they say you can have a glass or so ... and be within the limit doesn't that depend on the person and other stuff like if food was consumed and how quickly and how long the break was ... and each person is different.

Unless you're overfilling large wine glasses it's rarely a glass or 2 that ends in tears if everyone is honest.

AFAIK the problem is the drivers well over the limit. Driving with zero alcohol is a good idea because you never know when you will encounter one of these idiots.

Many countries are slightly lower than NZ. One could make the observation that the smaller the typical body size of the people in the relevant country, the lower the limit. Of course there are exceptions.

The UK, Canada, the US and Mexico are all 0.08%....like New Zealand.

Another observation that could be made is that countries with a "reputation" for heavy drinking have lower limits (Russia = 0.00%)

NZ isn't wildly out of line, though 0.08% is at the upper end of the 0.05% to 0.08% range that 90% of countries would fall into.
