Hi everyone I'm new on here and after searching everywhere online, this seems to be the best place to ask for info regarding my issue in NZ.

I live in albany, oteha valley and recently moved house to just down the road from my original address. When I asked slingshot to connect my new house to the internet they said all the ports are filled up and that I will have to wait over 110 days on a list of 11 people waiting to get connected to the internet. All other internet providers said the same thing and a couple like vodafone suggested we use 3g wireless or satellite (yeah right!).

Now living in such a developed area of New Zealand, this seems unbelievable to me that nothing has been done to fix the situation especially with so many people waiting. It's going to be nearly 2 years before my area gets UFB upgrade too so waiting that long is out of the question. What can I do? Can I ring up and pester chorus to sort it out ASAP? I assume no one else has made a fuss until now and just accepted their fate...

You can't call Chorus as you are not a Chorus customer, Port waiter lists makes no difference to which retail ISP you sign up thru to get connected

The area you are in now has 4G coverage

But chorus are the ones who sorts out the cabling and broadband lines?

4g or 3g, it's still a huge amount of money to pay for a small amount of bandwidth... Rather have broadband

Bandwidth on 4G is pretty good - far better than a lot of fixed line installations.

I'm sorry but $70 for 5gb of 4g internet is way too expensive for me. I'd even prefer to pay $100 a month for a much slower speed but unlimited broadband like slingshot offers.

Many ISPs offer unlimited Vodafone , Telecom , Snap ETC......

As advised above you are not a Chorus customer

It would seem as though there is nothing that OP can do other than pay oodles of money for a cabinet himself? I don't envy his position at all.

It depends on what the issue actually is. Sounds most likely like a port waiter situation, so there is probably a cabinet there already. In general terms Chorus are pretty good at adding line cards where needed if that's the shortfall, so would be interesting to know the exact problem for this area.

It's not really as unbelivable as the OP would think though - there's plenty of people who can't get a fixed line service, and plenty of options in these situations. Given it's a waiter situation, there's got to be plenty of people who have a connection - what about a high speed wireless link to someone you know nearby, or ask your new neighbours... There's plenty of people here who have set up similar temporary or permanent connections.

That cabinet you are on will be upgraded in a few months to a year for VDSL and have a new line card installed. I have a mate on the same one. $100 says when its connected you will be praying that you get over 200k on downloads and regret flagging it and going for RBI or a data SIM.

Right yeah I mean I want a big data cap not high speeds. We are unsure what exactly is going on with 11 people being on this port waiting list. Trying to get hold of Chorus to see what is going on. I know we aren't a customer of chorus, but other ISPs said it's Chorus who deals with the lines.
So if I can talk to them and get an answer out of them, we can work from there.

What is the meaning of adding cards? So more people can access the internet in a neighborhood?

Now are you wanting VDSL or ADSL?
Thats not the part of albany i thought you were referring to.
VDSL will definitely be a waiter list ADSL doubt it.

Assuming you're getting a cabinet upgrade in a few months your only solution if 3G/4G. There is nothing that can be done, and in all honesty you just need to be grateful you've only got to wait a few months, there are people getting RBI upgrades who have had to wait several years for internet and now thousands of users on Conklin's who despite having internet are only getting a few hundred kbps tops during peak hours.

Upgrading infrastructure isn't an overnight process and costs a huge amount of money.
