hi,

I live in a semi-rural(4km from Hamilton city boundary) area with a DSL cabinet 400m up the road. This is an ADSL1 cabinet that appears to only provide BUBA services to ISP's. The chorus map shows my area as RBI only with no UFB planned. All cabinets close by had VDSL capability added 6-12 mths ago. My current connection with VF is useless during busy periods. No 4G RBI available. No wireless options due to trees. Other ISPs wont provide copper services as no EUBA. A developer just paid $100k to have chorus run fibre from this cabinet past my house about 2km to service 25-30 new sections.

How do i find out what is planned for this cabinet, and whether the new fibre will have retail services available for other residents on the road? I have no issue waiting, but having some indication of when or if ever services will be improved, or why this particular cabinet has not been upgraded would be helpful.

How is private funded rural fibre treated with respect to retail services?

Would appreciate if anyone could offer any helpful information, or is it just a case of welcome to chorus's crap world, and be happy you get your 32kb/s?

cheers
Dave

ps. i am new and this is my first post.

Almost same situation here.

Im about 400m up the road from where UFB ends in Feilding, even though im in Feilding in a new subdivision, wont get it. I've rung Chorus who are doing the roll out here, Crown Fibre Holdings and the ISP. I've got very mixed messages from all of them with the last stating that its feasible and then sent me an email with number to quote to the ISP.

Long story short, the ISP came back saying it'll cost me 24k to get it, all the while a developer is still developing next door in a new st and we have a main trunk line of Fibre rolling down the street next door for all of Feilding and the rural sector apparently (stated by Chorus)

Its very hard to get any information on it that is consistent... and i've spent months contacting people about it.

What's the ID on the cabinet?

As mentioned, if you want fibre in an non UFB area it is very often possible, but expect a 5 figure install fee. Email ruralbroadband @ chorus.co.nz to find out more.

I don't think Chorus will be providing fibre in your area ever hence why none shows as planned.

Not sure of cabinet number.
I know UFB wont get there unless the local council manage to get funding in their proposal to govt.
If chorus have put fibre in as per developer then there must be a fibre backhaul already in place.
If that is the case, why would the cabinet not have been upgraded to VDSL as per surrounding cabinets?

3G RBI is not worth it and I have no idea when VF intend to add 4G.
Does anyone know how the privately funded chorus fibre that runs past my gate is treated?

Some common sense info out of chorus would go a long way.

Rural map shows fibre from cabinet joining an upgraded cabinet 800m up road. No sign of fibre that was just installed.

You haven't said precisely where you are, but if you are looking for UFB, then Chorus don't provide this in Hamilton. Have you tried the address checker for Ultrafast, as they may cover your area, depending on how far from Hamilton you are.

The map only shows fibre that you can connect to; it doesn't show point-to-point "distribution" fibre. I also don't know how regularly that map is updated!

runningman, i am aware this is not a chorus UFB area and am out of UFFs zone.
The question lies around why its still BUBA only and what does it mean now chorus have run fibre up the road.

Cabinet in Q is cnr woodcock and tauwhare rds, and fibre now runs the entire length of woodcock and part way down windmill.

There's fibre to your cabinet but there's no plans to upgrade it, not sure what's happening with it.

Given the local council has put a bid in for rural UFB funding in my area, would that be a reason why chorus are leaving 'as is' so they can avoid costs?

No. Other than fronting up with the build costs for Chorus (could be 5 figures) there are no options if you believe you can't be served via wireless.
