Hi,

I am interested in comments from anyone who is using or has used Snap as an internet provider in north Canterbury.
We currently use Vodafone, was Telstra Clear, and have noticed connection speeds getting slower. At peak times around 7pm till 10pm we are luck to get 0.40mbps from a possible 7 to 8 mbps. We are only 1 km from the local roadside cabinet but not sure if we are on the Cust or Rangiora exchange.

Speed tests done at 6am get a result of 6.5 to 7mbps. I do accept there will be some speed loss at peak times but all the way down to 0.4mbps is not really acceptable. Trying to talk to Vodafone is hopeless so it's time to move.

I use Snap as a provider at work and noticed a huge improvement in speed when we switched from Telecom. From what I have read here lots of positive comments re Snap so just looking for anyone who has or is using them in a rural/country area.

The cabinet is supposedly running ADSL2 so we should be getting good speeds out here but I have a feeling there may be a lot of traffic shaping/throttling going on.

Thanks for any help & suggestions.

Chris

What are your modem line stats? Speedtests are essentially meaningless for troubleshooting.

Hi,

The modem is a Belkin Surf with the following in the status screen,

Status = Showtime

Data rate(Kbps) 7616 downstream 640 upstream

Noise Margin  14 downstream  12 upstream

output power(dBm) 24 downstream 13 upstream

Attenuation(dB) 119 downstream  198 upstream

Thanks

Stu

Moved to the Snap forum. Obviously the correct place for this discussion.

Looks like an ADSL1 not ADSL2 connection, given those line stats. Combined with the peak time congestion, you are most likely connected via a Conklin.

In simple terms this type of cabinet has very limited backhaul to share amongst all the connected users.

Have a read of this discussion for a bit more info on what a conklin is

Your upstream also looks a bit low - do you have a master splitter installed?

Hi,

No master splitter but thinking I will try that next.

Snap reports our address as having ADSL2 when I look it up on their site but the chorus site mentioned in the link above only shows us as connections >5mb. Very confusing as to what we actually have in the cabinet.

I suspect it's only adsl1 as mentioned which mean there is no real benefit from changing provider. Pity I can't get Snap to install a test to see if it is faster.

Thanks again for your comments

unless it's fibre-fed rbi dsl you're likely to experience slow speeds and high latency.

i'd recommending checking out if amuri service your area for wireless.

although they seem to be targetting on the slower end of wireless speeds, you should get a more usable connection out of it, and hopefully they'll upgrade their infrastructure sometime, where with RBI if it's not fibre fed there will always be high latency.

Your story and problems are much the same as us we are in eyrewell area - 1.2km from local cabinet - which i believe is fibre connected - there is fibre running past the cabinet anyway. Before the days of cabinets I believe we would have been off the Cust exchange.

Our connection speeds with vodafone over the last 4 months have just got worse and worse. at peek times max download speeds around 30Kb/sec often slower - It use to never ever be below 100Kb/sec and often 1Mb/sec. Latancys have increased too

FYi - we don't have a master filter installed - and we don't have naked DSL (only because at the time Vodafone would not let us) but there are No Phones, No Faxes, No Alarms connected to phonline at all ever except when internet goes down to test if the phone line is down too

Also No internal wiring or devices have changed since we use to have good speeds

I'm with Snap on the outskirts of Kaiapoi, I'm too having trouble obtaining reasonable speeds.

I've had sparkys through to clean up the wiring and install a master splitter... and improved it remarkably, but not to where I consider ADSL2 should be at.  Bought a second new modem (original was also new) as Snap thought my modem was the issue.

I'm starting to suspect their ADSL2 "map" isn't accurate, and I'm only on a ADSL connection.  I'm going to get an electrician out one more time, since they still reckon it's my wiring.  If it still isn't fixed then I'll probably break contract and move companies.

it very well could be wiring to the exchange rather than inside your house which you can't do much about.

does your modem sync at adsl2+?  even really far out where adsl1 works better you should be able to sync at adsl2+ on a long distance connection.
