I love how everyone is just assuming that the new pricing is unreasonably high. I highly doubt any of us here have any basis in fact for that opinion.

I don't think you can blame anyone for being ignorant of commercially sensitive information about SKY's costs.

The only basis that matters is does this represent good value to me. I don't care how the sausages are made so to speak.

Or maybe they will just turn the online version into a companion product, or an upgrade.

However this does come at the cost of less people watching sport, and therefore less interest in sport. Personally I used to watch a lot of sport, but since a lot of it went behind a paywall in NZ, I have lost interest in most sport.

It is election year, so maybe a party will bring out a policy to make all nationally significant sports events FTA, and that get government funding, FTA

Sky basic $49 plus Mysky $15 plus Sport $29.90 = $93.90 per month. Increase just one service, Sport from $59 to $99 per month right before a hugely high demand time seem like pricing for the hell of it. It all looks very unreasonable, however granted we do not know their cost structure

but if it has gone up that much then surely Sport on a Sky sub should also have gone up.

Yeah that is what I've just worked out - Sky Sport via decoder ~$90-95 with either HD or Mysky per month (No special pricing). Fan Pass $99.99 per month for not all sport channels.

Doesn't add up to me unless the Sky Sport sub is going to be going up too.

Just realised didn't factor in contract times.

Fan Pass cheaper over a year ($55 per month) if you do 2 x 6 month subs that they are bringing out.

Oh well, I have even less interest in Sky now than I ever did. I used Fanpass for cricket now and then, but can live without it now... I can't wait until the view on demand streamed TV revolution is fully here.

Free to Air would mean every man woman and child paying for "free" sports broadcasting whether they watch it or not, through taxation. Hardly free or fair.

Fortunately, this policy was voted down in the House recently.

We already do though via NZ on air. We no longer pay it as a seperate license fee, it instead comes out of our taxes.

This is crazy, I have spent this week comparing ISP's to move off Vodafone & Vodafone TV to New ISP (Bigpipe most likely) and upgrade to a new ATV to install the Fan Pass App.

If anything, the ISP's should be screaming a little bit, because it secures the Vodafone & Sky tie up even more. Fan Pass was potentially a good option for choice for Sports Fans in NZ, but now it just gives way more incentive to find illegal streams on places such as VIPBox. The other crazy potentials Fan Pass can have is a pass for particular sports eg: NRL or Super Rugby for example, unfortunately this doesn't look likely.

I surely hope Netflix or a Spotify like service can pick up sports broadcasting globally, of course, players salary's are tied up into broadcast deals for a particular sport such as the NRL, but interesting times ahead while Sky has a stranglehold on Sport broadcasting in NZ.

The new Fan Pass pricing model is the same as a Sky Subscription anyway. Stupid.

I was talking about payment for premium sports not general FTA programming. Broadcasting for events like formula one racing is not funded by taxes (I hope:).

Perception is everything. It seems like a huge increase, whether justified or not. It appears ill-judged, as it comes at a time when Sky is bleeding subscribers. It seems to smack of desperation. People can handle small incremental price rises, but this is almost calculated to drive customers away. I doubt it will drive many to the subscriber service. Could this be the beginning of Sky's death throes?

And that is a completely rational arguement - in fact it aligns closely with my own reasoning. It sucks that this cheap, reasonable quality occasional use legal option is disappearing, but I understand why. Regardless of how much we dislike any commercial entity, it's not reasonable to expect them to continue providing a service that doesn't make economic sense for them.

Maybe it'll push some people into (re)subscribing to their full service, maybe it'll push some people to obtaining the content via other means, and maybe some people will stop watching some things. They considered all that for sure.

It sucks, and I'll miss it, but not enough to pay $100/month.

I'm not so sure that we're all blaming Sky per se. Though, if they hadn't tried to outbid TVNZ for all the broadcast rights for sports, perhaps they wouldn't have got themselves into quite as sticky a situation.

But as some mentioned - they've already purchased the rights to a lot of these - are they taking a gamble that fewer higher value customers converted back to heavyish subscriptions will provide more revenue than trying to pick up as much of the the long tail of casual viewers as they can? Because that seems like quite a short-sighted move - many of their customers already despise them for charging so much, and lets not forget the recent activity in direct streams from sporting rights holders.

In the current environment, I'd probably wager that many people will just stop watching as much live sport and start watching TV shows instead.

Hmm, I was accosted by a SKY salesperson while at my rental the other day and made an interesting offer of the basic package price ($49.95) but they would throw in MySKY, sports and movies for that price for 12 months. No need to continue the subscription after that time either. Seems like a decent deal though I will never give SKY a dime.

I know someone who decided to give up sky as they could no longer afford it and didn't use it enough. When they phone they were offered it at half price for 6 months. They decided not to take that up. They were then told they had to make a trip to the city to drop off all the sky equipment, except for the dish. If they want the equipment back, aren't they supposed to send a courier pack to do that? When you get sky, you don't have to make a trip into the city to pick up the equipment.
