Definitely, That is the reason I put it on here. Free advice from 'Uber Geeks'. If there are any other ways that people could see to enhance the business, please feel free to throw your ideas down here.
I agree - design is pretty basic for today's expectations but functional.
A website is your first contact with customers looking for a product - it's worth spending a couple of hundred and getting someone to design it for you if you lack the experience.
Here are my observations (I've studied human computer interaction at university).
Remove the calculator - I clicked on that and actually expected something that you would type in how many units you needed and it would give you a proper price - not a "calculator" which people have on their desk or device.
Statements like "as little as $20 per bulb" doesn't really tell me how much it will cost. On a subsequent page it shows $20-24 but again it doesn't tell me whether I am in the $20 or $24 bracket for the x number that I want. Unfortunately, people are lazy (I include myself) and unless you are the only people selling these or they particularly want to buy from you - they will move onto the next site that does have a pricing model and quantity price-breaks. Lazy means they won't phone or fill in the form.
What would be useful to see are examples of the costs and savings. Let's suggest a home with 4 bulbs; x per bulb plus $50 installation (I presume that is a fixed cost and not variable based on quantity - see above). Then show a return on investment comparing to standard and CFL over 5 or 10 years of use. People take these with a pinch of salt but it will get them thinking.
The gallery pictures look a little like they were taken from someone else's website (perhaps the manufacturer) perhaps you could get better quality pictures from the supplier.
Other information that would be useful would be the specs of the bulbs and controller (manufacturer etc), safety rating - do they meet NZ safety standards? Who says they last 50,000 hours? What guarantees and warranty do you offer. How easy is it to add more bulbs or would we have to pay $50 again. Perhaps a FAQ section would be useful.
Do you offer a "DIY" install for people out of the area? It may be a way of extending your market.
I like the idea of the business venture and wish you good fortune.
Your website is slow as a dog for me. I would suggest if you are using your website as the way to market you business, that you host it on NZ servers for a start, and use proper business quality hosting which will load it quickly. Currently looks to be hosted offshore.
Website appears basic/cheap/functional. I would even say non professional. Don't be disheartened. Website is ok and serves a purpose. It might be better if you give us more idea of the business.. is this a part time thing/full time thing? who are you trying to target? Latest news section says 'Hello world!!'
A full time service selling and/or installing Wifi-Controlled LED lights. We sell NZ standard BC or E27 Bulb, with adapters available for downlights and other fittings. The bulb sizes will be the same as a standard globe bulb, however a downlight shaped bulb is be created as we speak.
We are targeting the Innovators and Early Adaptors, Homes on the Northshore of Auckland and Businesses (Bars, Hotels, Cafes etc) Auckland-wide. For the time being.
We have instructions so that people can install them themselves (but it isn't that easy if you don't have a bit of an idea how to play with IP addresses and how the lights talk to each other). That is why we offer the installation service, and for the businesses this will be a must, with the programming that will be needed.
We intend to use the website as a marketing point, hence the SEO research. But for the primary marketing we will be relying on Email, Brochures, and intend on placing a 1 day sale site advert. As well as word of mouth, which can prove quite effective in NZ.
The product is solid and sells itself, especially with a higher Lumins product coming out, it breaks the argument of $/Lumins which is stopping people from jumping to LED as a viable form of lighting. And with a 50,000 hr (5 year) lifespan, verses 1,000 hr for a traditional bulb it is starting to make more sense. Did you know traditional bulbs have been taken off the market UK wide now?
So that is the idea for now. The next thing on the list is to re-do the website (we will through a couple of hundred into that). Can anyone suggest someone to do it?
It is the intention to take and hold the market in NZ on this product, so a good start is very important. Thank you so far for all of the great feedback.
I can cope with grammar errors, but selling lighting and not being able to spell a basic measuring unit, lumen ( plural lumens or lumina ), would prevent me from using the business.
